So Bought a small blue tang from Ellies Friday, it died on my Saturday. Bought another one from seaside aquatics Saturday, it died on me this morning. Both in my 20G as QT, with powder blue. Now I notice powder blue has ich on it..........I think I'm just not good with tangs.

Took me three trys. Same issue. Also what I did was start medication about three days after. Not sure when you started yours. They are stressed the f out and then you throw them in a QT with medication.

I've never liked Ellie's, the couple times I've gone they always had super infected fish. I've got stuff from seaside and the fish usually always die on me pretty early on. No more fish buying from those two places.

Yeah as IT GUY mentioned, hold off on adding your meds. If you're using copper bring it up very slowly over a few days. If you don't think that was the cause then freshwater dip before going into the QT can buy you some serious time and provide immediate but temporary relief for whatever the fish is dealing with.

Sorry to hear, always a bummer to lose fish specially trying to QT. I had a real bad run for a bit and ended up not QT'ing my current fish. It can be frustrating.

It's funny how that works, I've had really good luck with fish from Seaside in HB.

Hybrid ttm is pretty decent if you have extra equipment hanging around and a bottle of seachem prime, avoiding using harsh meds like copper is my preferred way of qting now and hydrogen peroxide baths aren’t harsh for most fish. I think my success rate is 13 out of 16 even including losses like a pintail wrasse that got delayed for 48 hours

I don’t think it’s fair to blame ANY lfs for sick fish. Unless it’s advertised and sold as quarantined and treated and to be sickness/pest free. The responsibility to properly qt and treat fish unfortunately falls on the hobbyist. ANY lfs could have ick/velvet/etc. these fish are all from wholesalers and come in contact with many other fish and are already stressed out. I think it’s the “easy” way out to just lay blame on the LFS. We all have added fish with out QT and in many cases have been successful but every time is like playing Russian roulette. I can say I have gotten many many fish from Ellis - and everyone with proper qt has been great.

I know it’s difficult and not practical for every hobbyist to qt fish- (I never did for a long time either) but once you commit and make that change to start qt every fish (and coral for that matter)- you will be very happy and it’s satisfying to know your efforts were fruitful with healthy fish. And with the current price of live stock these days, it’s a gamble I’m not willing to take anymore. It really sucks waiting the 30 days to get any new fish in the display, but it sucks more to watch helpless animals suffer and die, as well as watching your hard earned money be flushed down the commode.

if I had any advise for a new hobbyist I would advise to get over the hump and qt ALL live stock. Before I did it- it seemed like “the impossible task” but now that I do QT - I couldn’t see doing it any other way.

Good luck and happy reefing!

I’m in the same boat. I lost 2 tangs this morning that I bought on Friday. There’s so many ideas about the right way to quarantine, but what works best for you Bgfish? Want t start to try to do it after so many years of stubbornness.

Personally I like 30 days in copper power at 2.5 ppm. This is good for ick and velvet

if they have flukes you can do a prazipro or general cure after copper is done and you strip it from the water. I also do metroplex or kanaplex and focus on food if they need it as well. This can be done with the copper.

the tank transfer method is also good.

I got 2 blue Tang's from @bigpaul and they were both eating pellets and flakes. Also they both had been QT for a period also. I would suggest him if you are having a hard time.
