Hey Everyone,

I am going to start up a little member participation series here about your water chemistry. This could help others in the hobby that are just starting up or want to try something a little diffrent. The first part of the series will be about temperature. What do you all keep your temperature at in your reef tanks and why? Do you have it fluxuate or do you leave it set the same all year?

I'll go first. I generally keep my water temps under 75 deg in the winter and around 80 max in the summer. I use my apex to control the water temp with a custom season schedule. The reason I currently do this is because after reasearching water tempratures in the ocean it is always fluxating based on season. I do get a lot of questions about why so cold in the winter as well but I find my tank really like this balance as well as I like to run my salenity a little high so it allows for more oxigen in the water.

During summer I shoot for 78, winter I shoot for 77. Why, because we can out do nature, and temperature is something I can easily control, so the more things I can keep stable, the better.

I set my chiller to 77, but it does not come on unless my tank goes to 79. I do not have to run heat, but that may change with Radions. My tank hit 74 a couple times on the coldest days of winter, but i never saw any ill effect.

I was suprised to learn how much the water temperature changes on different reef over the course of a year. 74-85 was the only one I specifically remember.
Most hobbyists panic at much over 82. I kept my old tank 78-83 as I could not keep the temp much lower and stable without a chiller. The chiller would heat up the whole house and cost a small fortune to run. 78-79 winter and 80-83 summer.
My new tank is much cooler. With it dipping to 74 this winter and the heaters running a lot. In the summer it only got to 81 on the hotest days, with just 2 small fans for cooling.

The ideal temperature for a reef aquarium is 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit. I aim for a constant 77 degrees year round!

I have a 120 display, 175 gallons overall water volume with sump. I keep my temp the same year round. I run it at 78 degrees +/- .3 degrees. I buried 30’ of 1/2” pvc in my planter, pipe is 4’ deep. It works well to keep temps stable and cool my tank in the summer
