I bought an Acropora frag probably 2 1/2 weeks ago and it came with a body guard crab living on it. I was pretty excited about this but the next day he was gone... Late last night while the moonlights were on I saw him back on his acro. I was amazed that he found it because the frag was on top of a rock in the middle of the tank and would have been pretty hard to get to it. I think he was cleaning it and also my acro is starting to grow since some of the tips are turning white and extending. I also saw this last night while the tips were shedding. It was pretty awesome.. this morning.. the crab was gone. I think he just visits his acro from time to time.... is anyone in the same boat as me?

I will get a pic tonight. Hopefully he visits tonight haha... The acro is a brown fluffy looking type. Not the deep water kind. Sorry for the dumb description. I am new to reefing...

Also anyone recomend a good coral place around Orange or Anaheim area. So far I've only visited one which has pretty good choices and decent prices which is the one off Yorba Linda blvd.

Brown and fluffy doesn't normally describe and acro crab. They are usually white with a black band across the area of the eyes or purple, but all that I know of have a smooth surface. I would get an ID on him quick as he could be considered a "pest" crab one that actually eats acros.

If the crab is brown and fuzzy, KILL him!!! He will eat the coral! He will rip of the coralites and eat them! The crabs that have a symbiotic relationship with the coral and actually live in the coral and keep it clean are different colors but very tiny, smooth and light colored. I'll try and find pics of the 2...

yup.. If it has hair it should not be there. Only clean crabs are safe.

Seaside in HB sometimes has them. Or am I thinking of Porcelin crabs?

Gino. Do a search I think there was a thread where everyone added store names to it that were around.

wow thats one hairy crab! mine is a smooth red/maroonish crab. Its pretty interestign because when a turbo snail tried to go on the frag the crab fought him off hahaha....

Note: the crab is 1/4 the size of the snail lol.
