My wife and i are having our anniversary and since we never had a wedding, were gonna go pretty big w a party. I am going to set up a tank and put our wedding cake on top of that. I want to display a bunch of nice corals an some fish in a 20gal frag tank i have. My question is about lighting: i want there to be some good color and want everyones polyps at full attention. Can i pull this off with stunner strips mounted on the board set on the tank for the cake to go on top of? Or would i need something with some more par? They will be right on top, above 6" of water. I havent bought anything yet because i dont really know what i will need to have things just right. I intend to pull most everything out of my display including lr for filtration. I dont think i will need to run a skimmer since it will only be a day or so. Anyone have any sugestions?

Wow. Your wife must be cool to allow this. I would think less PAR to induce the polyps to extend for light. As for removing the LR and such from your tank, I would advise against this. You may upset the anaerobic processes under the rock and induce a phosphate "free-for-all"(yeah that's scientific nomenclature lol).

I think the main question is regarding the lights though. I dont wanna have a big canopy, just whatever can sit right under the top cover. If i have to build a mini canopy type thing i will, but if slimmer is better for the display i want. I dont think any vendors put their lights right over the water

I think stunner strips will be fine but you might want to buy them before hand and acclimate your corals to them. jm2c

Does anyone have any experience with using these as primary source of lighting? Or if its even at all possible?

What about those leds that go in the water? Sorry amigo no link. All you would need is a HOB filter with a Lil carbon bag and a heater. The led light strip comes with air bubbler I think. A par 38 would be G. The kessel one would be ball'n

Yeah but there is going to be a cake sitting on top of the tank, so that rules out kessil and par38... Anyone else know about lights in the tank?

That seems kinda ghetto, and its an all in one, with a black acrylic background, so it would have to be on the side, im not really diggin that. I guess i dont want anything showing besides the locline fro the return... Ill give aoa a call and try and find out what youre talking about, unless someone else can chime in?

How big is the cake? It would be thug if you could borrow a bigger tank, then make a cake stand out of acrylic posts that suspend the cake right above the water, then have sleek par38 highlighting the cake and lighting the coral......

Sorry i havent read the whole post so if this has been covered, if it has please move on.

Are you set on a frag tank? I think an AIO Nano with a glass lid would work well. You can mount some sort of LEDS to the glass lid. There are a ton of options as far as LEDS.

Also check out those Cerameco bonsai rock structures. It'll make it look Zen like.

You could build a base to hold the tank like its levitating over the cake. Then you can put the centerpeice thingy on top of the tank. I dunno, looks good in my head.
