Beat me to it.

Nick I will be honest with you. The Bubble King is a really good deal right now. If it is in fact coming with the RD3, it should cost $1620 it you use today's exchange rate. I would bet if you call it does not. On Royal Exclusiv's own site they rate the Double cone 250 with the RD3 pump the same as the one with the regular RD pump. Also on that site they claim the RD3 does 2000 lph of air while the regular RD does 1800. That says to me that Klaus did not put much effort into rating the cone skimmers. Also in years past he has declared that cone skimmers were just a fad and had worse performance than conventional skimmers. He claimed that this was why he decided to discontinue his research on cone skimmers. That to me is another red flag as fast forward to 2014 and we are discussing a BK cone skimmer. How ironic.

There are absolutely no guidelines to rating a skimmer. Most companies just pull a number out of their @$$! The primary things that are important in rating skimmers are:
1. Diameter of the skimmer body
2. Contact time (height of the skimmer)
3. Amount of air the pump draws

The ATB is a taller skimmer thus it has more contact time.
The BK has more air draw.

In the end the skimmers will have similar performance yet the ATB may have a slight edge at removing organics to a lower level due to the increased contact time.

In skimmer design
+1

Ive never seen any skimmer make or break an awesome reef.

Your info is obviously bias....you only have amazingly great awesome things to say about ATB. Seems like your posts are only about ATB, maybe someone should look into becoming a sponsor.
Aren't we all bias to a certain point??? I mean you like LED I like MH.... You like IO salt I like Coralife and so on and so on. We just back up whatever works for us and nothing wrong IMO about Cory backing up his friend if he likes ATB. In fact I'm glad Cory was able to help me get my issue resolve and Chad is very helpful.

Also that thread you linked happened to be an impeller failure so the pump is still good. I personally know of 2 people who have had red dragon motor blocks go out, then what...
Actually Tangwich/ Jesse thought it was an impeller but it turns out the pump was bad. I honestly thought about switching skimmer due to I'm on my 3rd impeller but after getting my ATB running again I really think I will stick with ATB. Might have to do the upgrade plate or switch to the ATB Elegance 200 PRO Protein Skimmer. Either way great product.

FWIW, I'm a huge ATB fan as well. So much I have a ATB for a backup, so I try to promote ATB because I believe in their product. Should I pay for sponsorship too?
Yes make check out to Sanh Please!!! LOL

I don't care about who says what about numbers, air, pump or ratings...all i know is that i believe my eyes more than others peoples' opinions..and after owning a bubble king, a vertex alpha and 1 atb 840, i can honestly say that i will most likely stick with atb. Over the years, i wanted to hate atb, but the fact of the matter is that my current 840 has pulled the most gunk pound for pound or shall i say liter per liter than any other skimmer i have owned in the past 12 years. some people are loyal to certain brands while others just troll to get a rise out of people but i personally have no allegiance to any brand..i just want the job done and done well and atb has delivered so i have nothing but great things to say about my atb skimmer...guess i better fork out the money for sponsorship as well. lmao.

Hey don't pull me into this mess! Nothing to prove... if what I've read is correct skimmers only pull approx. 30% of the DOCs so like RayRay said although they do help and are beneficial its not going to make or break your reef going with one brand or the other.

LOLing on all the drama about 2 skimmer brands. Seriously? Everyone likes what they like and pays what they want to pay. The end.

Oh...BTW...IMO this is funny because in the end...all those skimmers just spin/blow tiny little bubbles that waste sticks to and goes into a waste container. I paid $400 3 years ago on a monster BM skimmer and it still works like new. That gunk goes into the waste container just like the $1800 brands. And...when the skimmer gets all crusty and nasty on the outside I don't care because it sits under my cabinet. It cracks me reading all the passion behind this stuff. But then again, I'm old.

Just like all cars are the same. They all drive exactly the same wether you pay $10k or $100k!

now wait 1 minute! We as a forum recently decided priuses are poop. Also worthless are LEDs, TMP salt, jaebo pumps & angelfish. On the verge of giving BK skimmers the stink eye :)

my civic is just as good as any ferrari/lambo. In the end all those car engines burn gas and make the wheels turn. The exhaust goes into the air just like those expensive brands do! and when my car is all dirty I don't even care cause it was cheap.

i think the funniest part of this whole thing is that it's a discussion about a product that is literally pulling fish $hit out of the water.
not really...over on the charmin forums they argue about single versus two-ply...and we know what that cleans up ; )
