My Tank Build
#1
Just bought one of these HOG1 Hang-On-Glass UAS Upflow Algae Scrubber with Green Grabber surface should be arriving today. Kind of excited but can anyone tell me of their experience with these. I feel like I have been living under a rock as I never heard of this and yet its been around forever. Looks promising and makes sense in my head but then again my head has steered me in the wrong direction more times than id like.I will be running this in my sump along side a skimmer on a 100g tank.

I had a diy 5 gallon ats set up on my 180. It grew a shlt load of gha, but it also grew bubble algae. Every time I would harvest the gha, the bubble algae would pop. Kinda annoying. Other then that, the fact it was growing gha meant that it was working.

From what I've seen, this is a great investment. I would have love to set one up on my 110g but didn't know where to purchase the system. Good luck with yours.

Your using a skimmer I don't see much point to this. What am I missing?
You are missing that algae consumes phosphates. If he grows algae in an optimum controlled environment, it's less susceptible to grow in the display.

Not to discount that ATS actually work, but wouldn't you be better off growing both pods and chaeto in your fuge? I don't like the idea of growing a nuisance algae in my tank, how the hell are you supposed to keep it from getting into the DT? In regards to nutrient transport, you would need a very big ATS to compete with the blob of chaeto that can quickly grow in a fuge.

Not everyone uses a refugium. I don't. For people who don't use a refugium, this is another option.

I myself don't have a refugium, but I understand phosphates lead to algae so I have a clump of chaeto in my sump. Seems too counter productive to grow a nuisance algae in hopes of not getting the same nuisance algae else where in the tank. Just my 0.02 cents though.

I've never seen any green hair algae in my display while running an ATS. Like I said, it's just another option for someone without a refugium, or a clump of cheato. I have had times where I had some red grape and cheato fall apart and run through my return pump into my display.

I use an algae scrubber . Haven't done a water change in three months . I dose calcium, magnesium, strontium, trace elements and iodide every week. I top off my tank with alkalinity water. Scrub my algae scrubber every 10 days. Excellent growth on my sps/Lps.

The ats is designed to give the algae an easier and better place to grow. If you did the research you really couldn't say anything bad about it. It's a good idea and have never heard one bad thing from anyone that has used it.
