This is my second thread regarding this issue. I purchased and paid in full for a 240 gallon acrylic aquarium from John (owner) at Advanced Acrylics located in Jrupa Valley California in February 2014. After waiting 14 months, and enduring Johns constant lies and excuses, I ordered a tank from another vendor. I requested my money back from Advanced Acrylics. Although John has texted me on numerous occasions promising to return my money, as of 7/1/15, I have not received a penny of my refund. I contacted the BBB and Riverside County District Attorneys Office and filed a complaint. John has not responded to either of these organizations. This individual, who claims to be a legitimate businessman, has, in reality, stolen my money. It is difficult to fathom how Advanced Acrylics remains in business. I am a senior citizen who lives on a fixed income. The loss of this money will have a significant impact on my quality of life. This posting is a warning to anyone who is contemplating doing business with Advanced Acrylics. "Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware".

This was a response given by SC50964 on the previous thread you made about this:

"I talked to John about this and he said that the op cancelled after the tank was built. He offered to refund but only after he could find a taker for the already built tank but the op refused. "

I needed someone to build my sump and was concerned about AA after reading plantman3's complaint thread on SCR. I contacted John and that was what he told me. I ended up going with him to build my sump and the sump was built to exactly what I ordered and the usage of time was very efficient as well (1.5 weeks).

I'm glad you had a good experience with John at AA. I had the same experience multiple times now.

As for OP, it sucks that he lost his money and I think it is good to post these kinds of threads when/if a company does you wrong but I also think he should post the whole story. This time around he tried to make it even more of a sob story by adding "The loss of this money will have a significant impact on my quality of life." I may be wrong here but if you are able to pay a second builder for that large of a tank and wait 14 months until trying to get your money back than I don't think that really shows proof of a significant impart on the quality of your life. If you put it all on credit than that is your fault. I know if john had screwed me out of my high priced sump I would not have been willing to buy a second sump at near the same price even on credit until I got my money back or was able to save up again.

Again, I'm sorry to hear that OP lost his money and I'm not saying that John does good 100% of the time. If something goes wrong though I would be trying to get to the bottom of it way before 14 days let alone 14 months.

From my experience with John from AA is his quality of work and knowledge is top grade but his customer service skills are hit or miss. I've been seeing more complaint from people ordering from out of state but like Mike said there's 3 sides to every story.

I've been purchasing AA products from John for the past 4 years into this hobby and never experience a bad transaction. But I've also learn prior before ordering is to never pay full until the product is completed.

As I've learned, only a deposit is necessary to get the build going. Only pay in full when you pick up.

That's what I did.., just paid for the material fee and the rest at delivery. I may go back and add a cover at a later time when plumbing is all done.

Man 14 months tho? I know patients is the name of the game in this hobby but I've seen houses built quicker. 14 months is unacceptable unless agreed upon at the time of transaction.

and we cant discredit his warning. I have geard many stories if AA's douchie service. a lot of people gives a rats @ss when theyre sitting on their high horse. I once bought a supposed owned dtv box. tried activating it and it was leased. went to return it to the douche in ny. he tells me to buy insurance. package arrives and he tells me he didnt get it and to open a claim for ins. I opened a claim with my bank. got my money back but lost out on 50 shipping. once people have your payment they have the upper hand.

Wow. No one has any sense of humility. Regardless of who is right or wrong in this dispute. Just because your older, are you guys suggesting you can't spend the money on a large tank. And even if on limited income, one is not allowed to prioritize on spending choices without finding criticisms from others.

There have been so many comments on this forum over time from guys about withholding reef spending from a spouse; getting your credit fixed, selling your stupid childish mask; toy race cars, on and on. It's one thing to plan and save for an expensive tank, yet another to be defrauded of that money.

This guy should not be criticized for wanting a cool tank, maybe for being naive (deposit probably a better way to go ), or overly patient.

I have gotten great stuff from John, but I don't think he has ever responded to complaints on the forum (might be a smart strategy ) but we don't know the facts. The OP put a heads up thread. And without John responding, there is no way to know the truth. Even if he responded, hard to get all the facts out truthfully. Like it was said, three sides to every story.

But lay off the guy for being older and not wealthy. That just seems mean spirited

I don't think anyone meant any harm Mark...atleast i know i didnt....my post was more of a poke fun at society in general these days and how so many people don't live within their means. of course everyone can do what they want with their money, regardless of social status, age, gender etc....but i took his post as those poker players that complain that they just lost their rent/mortgage payment on a few bad beats. i am a true believer in staying humble because the cards of life can turn on anyone of us at any second but i just feel if you can't afford to lose that money without it having a significant impant on the quality of his life, maybe this hobby isn't for him. I don't own a soap box so i will just step back and let the thread runs its course.
