For a tank that size, the best way to control automatically is to set up an AWC if you can.

Have you tried replacing the power cable? Take the batteries out of your remote, see if that does anything.

Have you tried crystal dynamics aquarium down in Oceanside? They do custom tanks. But this one is very unusual shape.

Don't worry too much, you don't have any corals yet in the new tank. New algae and nitrogen cycle is going to be moving around a lot until the tank is fully cycled and through the initial uglies.

Since your nitrates are 50 in an empty tank, I'm assuming that you are near the end of cycle? Pretty normal for your alkalinity to drop as ammonia is converted to nitrate. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just add part B to bring it back up.
