Heyyy my name Jacob, I've been in this hobby since I was about 10 which was 6 years ago. I'm kinda new to this forums so I just wanted to show my pico jar that I'm experimenting with. Hahah hope you enjoy PS I started this "tank" on Friday so it survived 4 days so far.

I made this miniature lighting system from an old garden spotlight. According to my meter it's about a 2.5 watt output which is kinda over the top for a small tank hahah anyways the coral seems to be doing fine even tho it's under an intense lighting. It actually just started to pulse naturally last night.

Oh btw this is a closed loop system so nothing goes in nor out of this ecosystem. No water change or adding nutrients/food. Xenias are photosynthetic so hopefully it'll just survive on it'll survive with what it has. I'll be updating you guys on this weekly until the coral out grows the jar or until it crashes. Most likely it'll crash tho . It'll be really cool if this actually can survive on its own.

i find this thread shallow and pedantic....

nah, j/k... that's pretty dope... find someone to give you a bit of caulerpa or other type of macro algae to help it out... i've seen these micro tanks work actually... i love that you're using a jar...

I actually have some cheato in my main tank I was planning on putting some but I feel like they'll grow like crazy and might overtake the Xenia

I tried to make a pico out of a jar a few years ago but could never get the temp right. As far as the lid goes it will still rust.

Yeah I was scared about that too. But it stays relatively warm up stairs in my room. And the LEDs actually give off some heat from its micro controller. So hopefully it'll stay at consistent in temperature. Oh and btw only iron and steel rust. When aluminum corrodes it creates an like a grayish aluminum oxide layer that actually prevents it from further corroding that's why they use it for food and stuff. (Sorry for sounding like a smart *** not tryna be)

It might not rust but it will corrode and release toxins into the saltwater. Do a quick search on google "aluminum in a saltwater aquarium" and you will find many links with more info.

I believe you but from my personal experience with mason jars is they will still rust. Mine did and it said the lid was aluminum as well. Just check it for rust from time to time.

This mason jar was meant for food so I think there might be a protected silicone layer. I forgot... Lets just hope so. Hopefully the coral won't die

Oh cool yeah that would be awesome. It'll be easier to work with since its plastic. Like I could get a clear one and glue the lighting system to it or something so it's not upside down hahah. Maybe even drill a hole in it and put a small motor with a propeller to create some flow in the jar.

Update:
-Led lighting system from a solar garden light overheated and burnt out hahah
-going to frys today to make a new one
-Xenia is a little shriveled up but still pulsing
-No algae growth so far.
-there's lots of Copepods tho
-hopefully they won't die out cuz of unstable temperatures and crash my tank.

(Every Friday, Saturday, or Sunday I'll post an update )
