First issue:
Either the first or second fish to go into my tank will be a pair of firefish. A PAIR, as in male and female, so they don't murder each other. My concern is, on all the online stores I haven't seen the option to order them as a pair. Can an LFS order them for me? Or is this just something that happens in your tank if your uber lucky?

Second issue:
This question seems a little silly to me, but I keep going over it in my head and I've got to ask it.
I have freshwater tanks. I have a little 10 gallon quarantine tank. Whenever I bring home a new freshwater fish, I pull a little piece of sponge out of my filter in one of my established tanks, stick it in the hob of my quarantine and I'm good to go. I understand however that it doesn't work the same way in saltwater. Do I just do daily wc's on the quarantine for saltwater to control/eliminate ammonia and nitrates? I won't have a large fish for a very, very long time, is my 10 gallon sufficient as a quarantine?

Third issue:
I'm almost sure about this one, but since I'm here... On a calfo style overflow, does it matter where on the back of the tank I put my pipes? i.e far left corner, right corner or center? I'm leaning towards center anyway, but would like to think that it will drain evenly regardless due to the overflow style. Sometimes my logic isn't up to par though.

I've got plenty of time to come up with more stupid questions for you guys before I set up the tank because a surprise has come up for us... we're buying our first house soon, and will be moving in within the next 2 months at least. You all might get tired of me. :hello:

It will never happen, :21:

As to your questions, I can only answer #2 as I've never kept firefish and I don't have that type of overflow.

yes 10 gallons is sufficient for most fish. No need to do water changes. Just start with cycled water from your main tank. Just do a 10 gallon water change and use that. The main reason for a QT is to observe the fish for a period before adding to your DT for any diseases that show up. This way you can treat them in the QT and it won't contaminate the Display. I'm sure you already knew the second part, but thought I might throw that out there anyways.

Good luck!

you didn't say what size tank you are putting the firefish into. I have multiples of purple and regular firefish. I have a large tank with lots of live rock for them to hide. If you go to the lfs, they have multiples in one tank. The main concern would be to keep the tank covered. They can be jumpers, especially when first introduced

Oh sorry, I'd be putting them into a 75.

I'm not trying to be a smarty since I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to saltwater, but an example of multiples at an lfs is not much proof for me. Freshwater tanks full of oscars and rainbow sharks are at lfs too, and that really doesn't work in the long run. I'm far more interested to hear about your fish. How large of a tank are they in and how many? How long have they been together?

firefish are way different than oscars ( amazon cichlids ) very peaceful easy to keep. I have a 300 gal reef with tangs and few others reef safe fish. the regular firefish have a tendency to stay to the top of the the tank while the purple like to hang at the bottom. I have 3 purple and 7 regular firefish and they do just fine wit large tangs, ( desi, purple, sohal, yellow, blue, etc. 75 gal you should be able to keep a small school, depending on the other fish you purchase. some lfs sell them for as low as $6.00 each. The key is to have live rock for them to hide in. Good Luck

Thanks a bunch overbored! I was worried about it since I've read they like to take out their own if they aren't a pair. So it seems I should be ok with 2 of any I pick out at an lfs then. Thanks again!

Ya, they are a schooling fish, just pick the 2 healthiest ones, and you should be good to go!
