Last night I get a rock of zoas and a few frags. All excited I rush home, start acclimating and decide to do a quick dip. Frags dip fine, no biggie. Dip the zoas in some Coral RX and holy mother of God....this bristleworm the size of the lochness monster comes lunging at my face, fangs inches from my nose.

OK, so it wasn't that bad...But I'm a newbie and I have never seen a bristleworm!

I dropped the rock it was in...rock shattered...I ran, thinking it was attached to me, blood sucking my guts out...trip over the dog, but I keep running. Sheepishly, I head back to the bathroom...there lies the rock, on the floor...Mind you it's 2 am and my family is trying to sleep...Worm is halfway back in rock.

The little bastard worm is poking his head out there laughing at me. I grab a pair of tweezers and man up...I can do this...Grab the little bastard and yank him out, but then scream like a little girl (mind you I am a girl...) throw the tweezers, worm goes flying through the air...trip over the dog once more...return to bathroom after I have run halfway down the hallway screaming...now he's on my bathroom floor looking at me.

Whew, OK now that thats done...but no, I dip again and another little bastard comes out...I think you know what happens next.

At this point I'm tired and freaked out...scoop the worms up with a magazine, throw both magazine and worms into toilet....and run out (this time the dog is hiding).

Grab magazine out of toilet and flush them...head to bed...of course I think there are bugs on me all night...You know how it is...

Yeah, yeah I know they can be good for the tank, and all of you are used to seeing them...but wow those are some ugly critters...

LOL!!! I've definitely been there too. And I definitely think us girls are far more freaked by them. I've pulled a few monsters out of my tank, and could tell almost the same exact story minus the dog. Those things will definitely give you nightmares! I don't care how helpful they might be as part of the clean up crew, if I find one I immediately pull it out. FYI, hemostats work better than tweezers ;) It's even worse when they get so big, and comfortable, that they start coming out at feeding time like they're one of the tankmates! Beware, I thought I was in the clear one day when I went to move a goni in my tank and BAM! Huge one on the bottom side and I got nearly 200 bristles stuck in my hand! Scared me so bad I dropped the **** thing back in there and lost it for good.

I've been wanting to moves my rocks around for sometime as I'm not in love with the setup right now. But no way I touch any part of a single rock in there that I can't see...

It's good to have another girl on the forum. Usually it's a huge cack fest! Lol

When I first started I was all paranoid of works especially when I caught one eating a hammer I had just bought. Come to find out the hammer was dying and the worm was just eating the dead stuff. I wouldn't be too worried They can be a beneficial part to your clean up crew.

If u have a huge infestation then get a yellow corris wrasse. I had a ton in some rock that I got from Craigslist and after adding the corris wrasse I rarely see them. I know they're still in there, but the wrasse keeps the population in check.

wow thats crazy i had tons of them and i would try to take them out but never could. they would always slip away. I bought a trio of yellow coris wrasse and they completely disappeared. I thought it was impossible for the wrasses to eat such large bristle worms since they were so small but i guess so.

I never knew yellow coris wrasse ate them. I read that 6 lines would so I bought one of those. I also bought 2 yellow coris wrasses around that same time. Guess it could've been any, or all 3 of them taking care of the problem. I never see any baby bristleworms anymore, but I'm pretty sure that big one's still in there :/ I tried an arrow crab once but I think those are a waste of time. The dude seemed way too slow and just went after pellets instead lol

Haha nice. Yeah seems like most reefers are guys. The funniest thing is when I go to buy or trade frags with someone and the whole time they text me like "bro this" and "bro that" thinking I am a dude. Then I walk up to their door and when they open it I just get that BLANK STARE. That lasts a couple seconds until they process the fact that I'm sans wiener and we start talking corals...Pretty funny though lol

Just two days ago I head down to SD to grab some frags and the guy must have thought I has a guy, because he called to see if I was on my way and when I answered he hung up...Mumbled something about "Oh...Sorry"...So I had to call him back like, Yeah dude you got the right #, don't worry lol

Glad you like my bristleworm story. Husband and kid slept through all that noise. I swear a bomb could go off and they could care less.

Lmao!!! Great thread!!! And so glad to see that us girl reefers are multiplying!
Have to say, though, that I have had an encounter with a monster of a bristle worm & remained calm & cool as I yanked him out, lol

And it's nice to see I'm not the only "blonde" girl that doesn't get it sometimes! Lol!
Sorry Nick... Couldn't resist! But at least you're not afraid to admit it when you don't get it
