i wouldn't want them together... i would want the frag system to be stand alone... part of having a frag tank is if you're corals are RTN'ing or the tank is going through aids, you can throw your frags into the frag tank... although, it saves you money and headaches having them share the same filtration system... still... i think it's more beneficial having them separated...

but what's to say you can't have a separate frag tank, and another one attached to your DT... that would be pretty dope too...

I didn't mention a QT frag tank, that is what I think you are talking about. This is more for FSM that puts frags on the side before buyers arrive without having to dive in and get the frag. I think its a pretty cool idea, another benefit is if you like a certain kind of fish that likes nipping at some corals, you can just move them to that side lol OR you can do an external algae scrubber or fuge. Or put new fish in let them get fat before adding him. But yeah this is not to replace a QT system for either fish nor coral. But I agree a separate tank would be better but not many have the space. OR you can use this for new frags so the fish don't cover them with sand or get lost.

external fuge is bad ***... a pair of clowns in a bed of caulerpa, or other macro algaes.... or even xenia...

and i don't mean qt frag tank... i'm saying... like if you have all these frags, and if something goes wrong with your main DT, then something is going to go wrong with your sidehack frag tank... if it wasn't a sidehack, then you could frag all your corals, and save them in a different system...

this way is only good to get rid of FSM frag racks.. LOL...

For simplicity placing them together saves time and money , but your right gumbii if the main tank crashes so goes the frag tank.. For me keeping up(testing, dosing, cleaning) with two separate systems would drive me insane...I'll probably tie something in like this in future when i run out of main tank task to-dos .

Trust me it will make you insane... I had a 120 frag tank and a 150 display. I spend so much on the frag tank, had 8 bulb ATI dimmeable, ATB skimmer, mp40s, custom sump, full apex, it just added up. Then I would focus on one tank and neglect the other, go back and forth till I just had to get rid of one way too much work... if anything I would add something like that. If your tank is gonna crash well nothing you can do, I rather give away coral and have some backups somewhere else. That's just me.

Yeah i did the same and added a frag tank using the same sump. Gives me a little more space to put some frag and whatever cant fit in the DT.

Plumbing together is just easier. With proper maintenance and care a system "should" never crash. With that said, a qt system shold always be up to house them dying corals.
