My sand bed is getting shallower every year and I think its time to add some more sand. Im currently using carib sea's finer grain sand but it tends to move a lot since I have a FO system and I have a lot of flow. Do you suggest live crushed coral or just do dead crushed coral and slowly add it? Im open to other opinions too.

Not sure on which one to use but definitely add it slow with either, also a 1 1/2" pvc pipe can be vary helpful when adding sand use it as a funnel to put substrate where you want it.

Fill up a litter empty soda bottle about half ways, submerge it so it gets filled with water inside the tank, one's its filled flipped up side down and start pouring the sand out. As the sand comes out gravity takes effect and keeps all the the dirty water in the bottle I've tried it works great. There is a video on YouTube check it out.

You can add dry sand to zip ties, twist it. Put the zip tie in with the twisted (zipper end down) and slowly allow the twisted end to open. The sand will slowly come in contact with the water. and crowding will be minimum. Also, by using zip locks you can add the sand to certain sections.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard of the pvc method before. Should 8 just stick with live sand though? I didn't see any non live Caribbean versions.
