Is an airstone necessary for a 180 gallon fish tank? I have read that if you have powerheads and filters putting water back into the tank that you don't need and air pump and airstone. Thanks for all the help you guys are awesome.

a protein skimmer is more than enough airation... also the return... anywhere that makes turbulence or bubbles in the water makes oxygen for the water column...

I would say it's needed. I'm guessing in that large system you will have a lot of fish. Also as it heats up there is less o2 in the water

I'd recommend a skimmer over an airstone... For reasons stated above. Plus, the bubbles created from an airstone will pop, giving anything that gets hit with the water salt creep.
