Airline in skimmer...

I've been reading in multiple forums about adding an airline from outside to the skimmer... But no one has actually said where to put it. And is it a tube that runs from outside to somewhere on the skimmer or is there a pump that's attached? I'm sorry, I really see the benefits but I don't know how to apply! Help!

Your airline is attached to a pump making the skimmer draw air in to get it to work so, you would want to run the airline that is attached to pump to outside of your wall, house whatever is in the way.

Depending on your skimmer.. For mine it has an air intake line running up alongside of the skimmer body. Just replace it with a longer line... Even just to clear your cabinet makes a difference. The air inside gets stale.. You can try shooting it outside . But I worry about temp fluctuations.. Not sure if it matters though. Opening a window and airing out room helps ph a lot too.

The benefit is to pull fresh air from out side into your skimmer. Ok so most of these people that do this r back east. They pretty much keep there houses looks up all year long. To cold to open a window durning winter and to humid to open durning summer. So by having there houses sealed up there not getting fresh O2 in and the co2 stays in the house. Well co2 lowers the pH in water. So there tanks run at lower pH levels. So they draw fresh air from out side to help raise there pH.
Do me the draw backs are pulling unknown air particles and injecting it straight into your system. What if your next door neighbor sprayed his yard/house with bug spray. Now your injecting that into the skimmer and water. No thanks.
If your worried about co2 effecting your pH buy a few house plants.

I am concerned because my pH is low. Like 7.8 low for a BB SHWLR. I checked my ro/DI and my RO is coming in at 6.4 when I add salt it comes to 7.4 I checked to see if my cartridges need replacing but it's less than 3 months old.

I'm using a buffer and doing the airline to skimmer to raise it to 8.3 (slowly). I did a water change of 25% the last two days. And still nada. Help?!

You have any powerheads or returns that break the water surface? That will help

I added 2 large air stones ...I don't have the an O2 saturation test kit. So trying to rule out things.

How are you testing your PH? Maybe the probe needs to be calibrated?

Are you noticing any issues if your PH is in fact that low? Careful that buffer will raise your alkalinity. If your PH is low, your alk may be low as well. What is your alk at? Do you dose?

Well trying to figure out how to get it to 8.3 or are you suggesting that if it falls at 7.8 and it stays at 7.8 then all is good?

It's better then it going up and down up and down u will be putting your corals on a roller coaster. If u can get it to 8.3 rang and it stays there then more power to u. But I don't like my pH the fluctuate more then 0.2 points a day.
Corals and invert don't do well. To fast changes.
Take my tank for instance. My calcium was at 320ppm last November. I didn't go dumping a bunch of calcium in my tank to get it up. I would add a little here and there. And last month I tested it and it was only at 355ppm. Witch is still low. But look my corals r still growing here 4 months worth of growth with low calcium

I don't have corals. Only seahorses and a shrimp.

I understand. You make a great case for stability. I guess stop trying to chase the 8.3 and keep it steady.
