So I’m thinking of doing a small 10 gallon build and had a question for all the reefers on here! I’m guessing all you’ve guys heard of miracle mud right, if so do you think that specially for such a small build it and with all the spike ups of all the nasty stuff and not having a sump and not wanting to buy expensive equipment, do you guys think it would be smart/cool/ safe to use miracle mud as the sand bed for the new tank and still add corals, fish and such?

Lmk what y’all think please
Need everyone’s response on this!

I think you’d probably be better off going bare bottom, and adding a teaspoon of miracle mud once a week diluted in a cup of water. I wish the Fiji Mud was still available though.

From my understanding, using the mud as your main substrate doesn’t work that well because of the amount of fish waste & left over food landing directly on the mud, exhausting the mud much quicker. Also, all that waste has to be siphoned out during weekly or biweekly water changes just with like any other substrate & siphoning the mud defeats its purpose because all the good stuff found within the mud gets taken out. I had a similar idea years ago & was fortunate to come across a guy that was part of the development of miracle mud. I threw my idea out there & he responded with what I wrote above. He did say that a better idea is to use a HOB filter & place the mud inside that but a baffle needs to be made to soften the water flow from the pump pushing water in order to not disturb the mud. Cheto can be added with a small LED & you have a DIY mini refugium. Hope that makes sense. Good luck.

Auto top off, weekly water changes, surface agitation and very light feedings are going to be your major keys for success in 10g. I would paint the outside bottom pane a sand color and go bare bottom or at least <1" sand bed.

Mud is a mess you're not gonna want to deal with it and I don't think itll do much for ya. Isnt it supposed to be fairly deep in the refugium?

Chaeto reactor would be a better option or display macros
