hmmm, I've been hearing the lower the ISO better the pic, higher ISO..more noise, grainy...maybe i'm wrong ??
you are correct in terms of general results - however, technology has vastly improved over the days of film photography, where t-max was considered revolutionary.

the new cameras and sensors are able to handle the noise rather effectively... the chromatic noise that would be present at 1600 iso can easily be handled via the camera's software, or (my preferred method) in post production - especially if you're shooting in raw.

Four great lenses. Wish I wasn't envious but I am. Really great camera and that 100 mm macro is perfect for coral. Taking pictures of coral is really enjoyable for me. Enjoy the new challenge and I look forward to your new pictures. Congrats

What s/w are you using to process it?
i know the question isn't to me, but i've been pimping out Lightroom by Adobe because
  • it auto catalogs the photos for you, so you'll have them by date, and you can add keywords for search. before i used lightroom, i had a really retarded filing system, by dates, but i would never be able to find anything.
  • it shows you the color temp in kelvin, useful for us
  • you can save color profiles so that you just batch apply it to photos, rather than adjusting one at a time
  • more intuitive to use
  • native dual monitor setup

The video that the 70D can shoot is very good. I just shot 14 hours of dance performance videos over the weekend. The autofocus for video on the 70d is fast. You can get almost 1.5 hours of straight video on a single battery.

This is a big reason I went with the 70D. It has new technology with its Dual Pixel AF. Heard nothing but good things about it. And now you are confirming it :)

How are you liking the camera so far as for pic quality Mike ?

I also have the 5D III which has a slighty lower noise than the 70D at higher ISO. Besides that the 70D takes great pictures. I use it for sports as well since the 70D has a higher FPS. I mainly bought the 70d for recording multicam (2 cameras at the same time) with the 5d III. Since the 5D III has no (actually very slow) autofocus in video recording I put that camera has my main static camera. The 70D has quick autofocus in video so I use that for my panning and zooming.

Since you have a Macbook pro, Imovie is very easy to use with the 70D's video.

If you want super sharp focus you should microadjust your lens with the camera. Its easy and there's plenty of tutorials and videos to show you how. Thats another big underated tool.

Hey Mike, It seems like you know your cameras.... I see you live in Rancho Cucamonga. I live near Lake Perris. Like to meet up with you some day, so we can talk camera's. I'm just starting out. Let me know if and when, and I will make it worth your while.. :)

No problem. Not a camera expert but I guess an advanced novice. The next free public performance that I am going to video and take pictures will be at Barnes and Noble on Aug 17th. I dont have the exact times yet. Feel free to PM me with more details
