I have a 300 gallon tank with an AmpMaster Dolphin World series pump. It is overkill at 5800 gallons an hour, but I have it dialed back. The problem is that it sounds like a washing machine in the living room. Anyone have any suggestions on a quieter pump that will move enough water for a 300? Thanks for any help.
Rob.

I run a Hammer Head and it is not as noisy but it is loud. I put mine in the garage..:) You could put some padding around where the pump is to muffle the sound a bit but dont restrict the air flow over the pump.

Well, the whole system is in my living room so noise is a factor. I couldnt even stomach the price of a Red Dragon so I need something below $500 dollars but quiet. Have you heard of the Amp Master being loud? Everywhere I read, they say this pump is extremely quiet.

you are throttling it back and that could be where the noise is coming from. you could try putting a bleed off and rout it back in to the sump, that way the pump is not being held back.

I like the bleed off idea. I did open it all the way up and the noise didnt change though. It is resonating throughout the stand and walls. I am going to try the separate bleed off with a gate valve and see if it helps any.
I have always heard these monster pumps were quiet, I dont know what is up with this pump. It is just a loud, loud droning high and low just like a washing machine motor. I may even end up plumbing it with soft line and even go through the back wall and mount it in the back room if I have to. Thanks again for the help guys.

What are you using the pump for? Closed loop or return pump? You can always try switching to a laguna pump but I don't think they have anything close to the dolphin pump for gph. Reeflo's are supposedly good pumps from what I've read with a 5 year warranty, the hammerhead is rated at 5,555gph at around $460

If your using it for a return pump then id recommend switching it to a flowstar 1500 or 1800 or similar Laguna pump. Don't need that powerful of a return, less is better. Gives the skimmer a better contact time with the sump water.

Have you tried having it sit on a few mouse pads or some type of rubber to absorb the noise?

I have it on top of 3 layers of sound deadening barrier and that didnt help. It is for a return. Obviously way overkill, so now I am in the market for a smaller pump. Thank you for your suggestions and I will check those you mentioned. Any other suggestions will be more than welcomed also. Thanks.
