Any ideas how to make an adjustable mount for a float switch? This is going in the tank. Looking for some household fix before I take the acrylic route.

Something like this out of PVC:

Or, pick up one of those eshopps adjustable float holders and glue yours to it. I picked one up from COC for like $20.

Are you using some sort of hang on back filter or skimmer. Zip tie it to intake/outlet line
Thanks for the ideas guys. I think I will try zip tying it to the intake. I was going to use a magnet but it interferes with the float switch when I tested it.

Zip tie isn't going to work. I have an AC70 so the area near the top of the intake is surrounded. PVC is out since my tank is ultra small. Magnets interfere with the float switch. Might have to look into those float holders at COC or go acrylic. Hmm

Here's the one I was talking about: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESHOPPS-FLO...132?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e95876854

All you would have to do is use weld-on (acrylic "glue") to attach the float switch housing to the float holder.
