So I went down to the pet store and bought two live rocks a "Fiji" and some pink thing. Well anyway I was wondering if I could get some tips on how to arrange the rocks in my tank. I already threw them in there but in my opinion I think it looks weird. I know there's not much I can do but any advice is appreciated
Also can anyone identify the pink thing? Like why is it pink? :b
Here's a pic of the system

Well the "pink thing" looks like an anemone, and the zooplankton that lives inside the anemone give it the colors. Did I you go to petco or something?

Its coraline algae.
or it could be a walt smit reef rock

are you going for a minimalist look? cus your gonna need more rock then that. 1 option is to troll the market place and probably get yourself a HOB overflow this will allow you to add a sump for more rock or DIY one:

again troll the market place for a used sump for most of your gear. or make your own.

as for the rock, i agree with withoutaclue661. you have a nice piece of the right, maybe something to branch the left and the "pink piece" gives you more surface area to work with on corals and creates an arch for the fishes to swim through. i would say i would leave livestock for a while and work on stuff that will help you maintain your livestock.

where it may seem daunting, BRS has a great section on their youtube channel called "52 weeks of reefing"

you should check it out, as always ask as many questions as you can think. everyone is super nice here and have helped me understand the hobbie too
GL to you.

I like the rockwork the way it is. If anything I'd maybe try one or both piece flater/lower so its not as uniform. 2 peaks with a low zoa/poly rock between might look nice.

Keep a close eye on that anemone. Looks like its bleached or bleaching IMO. If it starts to move, the intake on that biowheel could be problematic, so could the heater. A sump is ideal for those reasons, or an all in one tank. I'll look at that light. You'll need something more than that hood you have now to give the anemone a better shot.

What are you water parameters?

I sometimes search up rockscapes by tank size on google. It gives me ideas and starting points on how i can rearrange my rocks to my tank size by viewing others rockscape that have the same tank as mines. i have a jbj 45rl, i just serached up jbj 45g rl reef aquascape on google. Also, i like rocks that are more porous than solid. They look better imo.

Nitrate0.25 ppm
I'm using an Api testing kit
Wdym bleaching?
And I'm trying to figure out what a sump is for.

bleaching means it's losing its color. A sump is a tank you put under your tank in the stand where you can keep filtration items. Filter floss ,protein skimmer, media reactor. You're using a waterfall filter, it's kinda bad of old technology. If you really like your tank maybe start saving and look into getting a reef ready tank with an overflow.

Gonna elaborate on what russ13 said:

A sump is another tank underneath current tank. It has multiple uses.
1 it hides all your equipment from your display tank.
2 allows you to add more rock in your tank without being in your tank for more filtration.
3 increases the amount of water in your system. Your main is 37g and let's say you have 10g of water in your sump. Then your system is 47g.

To get the water from your display tank (DT) your sump we use something called an overflow. As water is added to your tank the level raises and over flows into a pipe that goes into your sump. The water then goes through all the equipment then returned to your DT.

I agree with russ13 this is gonna be a lot of work if you dont know too much about diy or very new to the hobby. So getting a "reef ready" tank is a good option. Reef ready means the tank is pre drilled with a black box inside. That black box is the overflow. Add bulkheads and PVC piping that leads to your sump and its good to go.

Keep checking the marketplace here. Always good deals happening and more often then so you'll get something cheap.

Once again, dont be afraid to ask question. Google and YouTube are your friends. Gl

Making your own sump allows you to customize the size of each section. Petco currently has a $1 per gallon sale going on. Measure the space in your stand and get the biggest one you can fit there. With your dimensions looking about a 20g tank.

For baffles, glass is pretty cheap to buy, I would go to Lowes since they also cut the glass free for you. Silicone to stick the glass to the tank, watch that video I posted for you. Make sure its aquarium safe. GE 1 windows and doors is good.

Since your sump is quite small, its gonna be 3 sections
1st section the mechanical filtration. Filter pads works. Filter socks are better, can get a clip on sock holder and sock combo for about $25, rare to see them on the marketplace. This section. Will be small just big enough to hold the socks.

2nd is for equipment. Protein skimmer, heaters, media reactors. Skimmers is a divice that uses bubble to take poop and uneaten food out of the water before they have chance to break down to nasty stuff. Media reactors is basically a tube with two pipes, one pipe to bring water in, the water is then mixed with the media then out the other pipe. Media is normally GFO which is used to rid the tank of phosphate. And carbon to remove impurities from the water like yellowing and smells.

3rd section is your return section for the pump to retune the water to the DT.

You can have a 4th section for a refugium, some will debate forcing a small section for a refuge will have little to no effect, better to get a bigger skimmer to compensate. Again check out the marketplace for mid size skimmer rates for your tank

Hope this helps
