The only downside to these I think is if the skimmer trips out or starts skimming very wet it'll trigger your ATO with all the water that gets pulled out and messes up your salinity.
But the collection cup size will regulate the amount added. And turn off skimmer once it's done. So you won't get the potential full skimmer overflowing into sump and the most amount of ATO added is 1 gallon if the collection chamber fills

Only way I'd do a collection cup is with what you mentioned. Last thing I would want to see is the skimmer overflowing into the collection cup then onto my floor. Who wants fish diarrhea all over their floor? At least with the switch you have a failsafe.
looks pretty dumb. waste of space and money. looks like another thing you would have to clean. reminds me of those people who have cats and buy the odorless cat litter thinking their house smells any better lol
Also, unless you have an automatic neck cleaner, you'd still have to take your skimmer cup off to clean the neck to optimize performance.
Another thing to consider is that your drain from your skimmer cup would have to be taller than the walls of your sump. If not, the drain tube will have to go up and over or through the wall of the sump
Good point! For me the benefit is turning off the skimmer once it's gone bananas. The fact that it holds the skimmate is a bonus. It'll just come down to what's cheaper. This or break out box + float valve

Like you, I thought long and hard about doing something like this but in the end, I just ended up using a float valve in the lid of my skimmer cup attached to my BOB.
I'm waiting to see if I like my Vertex and I'm ordering one of the avast marine neck cleaners and the avast marine skimmate lockers. With an auto neck cleaner, I'll never have to touch my skimmer. That mixed with my auto water change system...pshhh my tank will be set and forget. Just feed and clean the glass.
I'm also considering having john from AA build me one and just use my BOB and install a float switch in the lid of the skimmate container. That would be a pretty easy thing to do. Prolly wouldn't have the little carbon deal on top. But ehh no biggie
