Got tired of dealing with my canister so i want to switch to a sump. Sadly i have had no luck finding a used sump for my 7.5 gallon cube. Does anyone here have experience making a sump that could either help me build one or i could pay to have them build one. I've currently doing research on DIY sumps, and any insite before plunging in would be welcomed!
Questions i have.
1. Should i go with a 5 gallon or 10 gallon sump for a 8 gallon cube. ( looking to upgrade to a 30 gallon tank in 8 months)
2. Would you guys suggest glass inserts or acrylic inserts.

A standard 10g would be easier, glass or acrylic depends on you but if you go with acrylic it needs to be thick or it will bow in the future. Its pretty simple to make if you dont want anything to fancy.

10 gallon if you have room, and OSH will cut double-pane glass for cheap. :) It's super easy to build one.

I would wait and save the money for the upgrade. Even a small sump custom made will cost a bit. YouTube DIY sumps and see if something you can do. BtW resale for custom sumps suck

Yeah, if you have space go bigger, otherwise 10 is fine (I have a 20 long as the sump on my 65g).

I just finished a sump for a 28g nano. I went with a 15g glass aquarium. I wanted to make sure I had enough room for a filter sock, chiller pump, protein skimmer, reactor and return pump. The 10g was too small. I found a design that I liked via the internet. I put one baffle that separates the overflow from the middle chamber. I put a 3 baffle bubble trap to separate the middle from the return. I bought some glass from Home Depot and clear silicone from the LFS. I cut the baffles that go to the bottom of the tank 7.5 inches. I wanted to make sure that the water height was high enough to provide my skimmer the correct operating depth. The other baffle, that is suspended, was 9 inches leaving a 1 inch gap at the bottom. I read a DIY sump build and it recommended that the suspended baffle has a 1 inch gap from the other baffles and is 1 inch from from the bottom. I am sure there are other opinions but I thought the source seemed credible. At first I was not wanting to DIY but once I started building, it's simple. I would go with a sump size that can be used for your upgrade to a 30g.
