I have it run in my system too. But beside killing bad algae, the UV also kill good algae as well. So I have it hooked up but I'm running it less now, I let it on more often if I have ich or algae outbreak. Especially if you're dosing microbacter7 or bacteria supplement then you'll need to turn it off before dosing and keep it turned off for 4 hours after dosing so the bacteria have more time to settle or attach to rock/sand and doesn't get killed by the UV.

I was told that turning on and off the UV bulb shortens the lifespan... Anyone have personal experiences with this happening?

i run one. i still can't figure how the beneficial bacteria on my rock and sand are harmed by the UV, but that is what i keep hearing. IMO there are no cons. the water clarity is amazing, and i have ich free tangs. i like it.

I ran one Coralife Turbo Twist 9 watts on my 100 gal tank.

I connect the UV from the main sump to UV to Refugium.

It's very beneficial for the UV to prevent ichs.
