Everything is dying... can't figure out why... tested and know nitrates are not good... I am doing a pH test, ammonia, and nitrite.... can someone come by and check it out? Our tank is in our office in Costa Mesa...

sorry to hear Adriana, hopefully someone close to you could help out. Maybe a fish died which caused an ammonia spike? For now I would constantly do water changes until it gets better. Hopefully everything goes back to normal soon.

constant water changes is your best option right now...if possible, place your coral and fish in another tank.

There is live sand, live rock, some corals, a yellow tang, an anemone, one clownfish, a foxface, acouple of little damsels... that is about it, there was more, but they died... also, overnight, all the snails died, which we thought was really odd... anyone know what could have caused this??

a dead fish, if its one of the bigger ones, can deteriorate the water quality pretty quickly if not taken out immediately. Hope you are able to save some stuff

WAIT. Take a breathe.

Lets get someone to take a look at the tank.

I can make it tomorrow or during the daytime is best, but if you can not get someone out there before SOON, call me, and I will drive down tonight.

We need to get some good test results and dtermine which scale you are on for the nitrates.

Dont bother with testing of nitirites anymore, (unless you get a very large algae outbreak)

You need to do a 50% water change like right now!!!

What are your stats, tank size, age, occupants, corals etc...

Age, I think maybe a factor here, but that is a very early / preliminary diagnosis.

We will figure out exactly what the problems are. But water changes are in your future right now.

Do you have RO/DI filter? Do you hve mixing barrels.

If not, how many 5 gallon buckets do you have, and can you get more, or get access to 55 gall barrel to mix salt water in.

If you have a mixing barrel, mix up as much salt water as it can hold, no lights, circ pump and or air pump, and let sit for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, I only have a one five gallon bucket, to bring with me, but hopefully you will have plenty on hand

Call me to make arrangements for me to come down.

how accurate is the thermometer?

How old is the tank.

Start changing water. Dont stop till its done. Then tomorrow maybe another 50% and then 20% then 20% every other day, til you get to once a week, and 5 gallons per week.

You could do a 5 gall per week as part of your routine.

What was your water change schedule before, and where did you get your water for the last WC

if everthing is dying then that means your tank is crashing and you need to get everthing out of it ASAP... water changes will only slow it down.. but something is def wrong with your tank...

The tank is 5 years old, I think? It has been with us since the old office... I don't have all the barrels and gallons for water changes... as we are paying someone for this service... so I guess were are going to have to go buy all this stuff, we have some stuff, but not all we need... so more money spent on a tank that's going down the drain.... I am so over this.... :bawling:

thats your best bet... i would just set up a QT tank and put everything that is still alive in it...

then take your tank apart... something is happening in there that you dont know about and or cant see...

have you checked salinity? Alkalinity?

pH seems a tad low, but if its usually that low wouldnt cause this.

I would like values for salinity and alk before I say its a crash, but if you had it 5 years, could be a live sand caused crash, that is why I go barebottom these days ;)
