I Purchased a reefers tank that was getting out of the hobby with all his equipment and livestock. Great deal got alot for my money but the skimmer ( Aqua C Remora ) he had hanging on back of tank was not operating. I noticed he did not have the right pump and figured this was why ( he gave me some bullshit reason about how it was overkill ) Anyway picked up a Maxi-Jet 1200 and proceeded to test out. First off the thing made an Obscene amount of noise....like a tractor going threw my living room. I know everyone says it needs to go through a "beak in Period" but I decided to unscrew the injector nozzle to make sure it was not clogged and noticed there wasn't anything in their but a hole...should there not be a spray nozzle like on a power-wash? all i see is a round hole!?

This is what i see when i removed the top screw,
Sorry about the weak pictures but you can see its just a round hold inside where the water comes out.

I have the same skimmer for one of my tanks. Looks the same.

The maxijet was super loud for me too. I switched it out, as a test, with another pump. It was an older cobalt aquatics pump that i'm not sure you can get anymore. In any case, it was much quieter... though definitely not silent. At least it doesn't sound like a helicopter is flying in my living room anymore.

Unfortunately, i don't know the exact model for the pump. When i get a chance, i'll see if i can read through the coralline algae to get it.

I had the same skimmer. You can cut the sound out by 75% if you cover that area in the picture. I used a business card wrapped in plastic. Cover the entire square area where the tube is showing... That hole has nothing to do with the sound.

Yea I'm thinking the sound mostly has to do with the pump as well, but I was mostly wondering not about the hole on top of the nozzle but the one inside where the water ejects from, Is it suppose to look like that? I was thinking it would look more like a spray nozzle not just a small hole? Not sure if I'm making myself clear...

Ok, Think I figured out my noise problem and it turns out its fairly common, the impeller within the pump rattles back and forth if any back-pressure is put on the pump, as is the case with the spray injector. Guess the company that makes Maxi-jet had redesigned this pump and it proved faulty for skimmers since it was not made specifically for them. Luckily I found a simple fix online *credit to Jay79 @ Manhattanreefs.com (http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/general-discussion/122221-noisy-remora-skimmer-fyi.html). All I had to do was glue the impeller to the magnet piece so it doesn't rattle back and forth and voila! no more noise! I have yet to test in the skimmer itself but i did test it in water and semi covered the outlet to check for noise, there was none and not only that but the pressure seemed stronger! anyway thought I would share my discovery and Ill post an update tomorrow when I have had a chance to re-install the skimmer. cheers!

It worked! all the rattling I had is gone!! and the skimmer is already starting to produce a nice foamy skim! Only thing I hear now is the steady hiss of the spray injector which is alot better than the rattling I was getting.

Any tips on cleaning the skimmer after a year of it running? My skimmer isn't skimming as nice as before.

Do the muffler mod above the spray injector and you'd be surprised how quiet it can get. A simple piece of plastic from anything cut to size and use some airline tubing as a grommet around the plastic and boom ur done!

I tested the pump in the dt without it connected to the PS, no humming noise, I connected the pump back to the PS and made sure it wasn't touching the glass, it's making a humming vibrations noise. It's def coming from the spray injector, has anyone found a solution for that?

If the noise is similar to the noise I was referring to in previous posts its due to the back pressure being applied from the skimmer. What pump are you using? If it's the Maxi-jet 1200 check out the vid for a possible solution that worked for me.

I'm going to try the 1200. I just got an email from the company and they say that the 1200 produced wet skim and micro bubbles, is that true?

You can adjust the wet/dry skim as for the bubbles yes I was getting some but I just stuck a piece of foam under the return and presto no more

Okay, problem fixed. I decided to try the mod where u glue the propeller of the mj. Works like a charm, a little vibration but totally way down from what it was.
