No prob. Have you ever seen anyone cut plywood or grind concrete mask-less. Absurd but everyday I see it. Amazing what one day is ok later becomes dangerous. You can't tell me they wear hazmat suits to take out asbestos. I've never come across that.

Not hazmat suits, but tyvek hooded suits, with respirators, in a negative pressure containment with a shower upon exit. Asbestos removal has cal OSHA regulations which are followed on every job I've ever worked on that contained asbestos. We always have to come in, cut and drop duct, so that it can be abated and reinstalled. I've suited up, probably over a hundred times. I know what your saying about concrete dust, sawdust, ect, and it's your choice to make on how to protect yourself. Do me a favor, look up how asbestos affects you lungs and how mesothelioma is contracted. Sawdust and concrete are not the same.

I was a building contractor and in the trades for more than 25 years. I've 'eaten' more than I care to think about since I remodeled older, historic homes in Chicago and surrounding burbs. I saw first hand and heard plenty of stories of guys dying a slow and horrible death from lung cancer/asbestosis. Asbestos is a big deal as the previous post from fly5150 laid out. There is no safe level, no "moderation"/the line "just a little bit" won't hurt you" is total BS. The fibers split length wise and get lodged in your lung tissue. You have to deal with the liability of disposal. You will be liable for any contamination and illegal disposal. In Chicago when I was in biz the fines were for disposal not removal. But I was on one job where the HVAC guy had to decontaminate the entire structure and looked at a law suit till it was done thoroughly. IME I wouldn't mess with it.
I didn't see this post, but you explained it perfectly.

Again. Tell me it's different from cigarettes or even cigars? Even alcohol.....nothing's "safe" until you live on a farm in Montana away from cars, people, everything. I'm simply trying to put perspective on a demonized chemical. My dad worked hvac for 40yrs. Before anyone even knew that asbestos even was dangerous. No one he knows has mesothelioma, if you know someone I'm sorry but don't start getting cray about removing it from your own house. If it's worth the money have a professional do it. It's an airborne carcinogen........that's it. Mask up and get rid of it.

This isn't a water line, it's a duct most likely in his attic. Hose down the attic? And he's probably going to drag it out of his attic through the house, distributing asbestos partials throughout his house, for his family to inhale, with the rest up in the attic for anyone working up there in the future to be exposed.

If you do it right it's actually really easy. Have a sprayer with water as you cut it. Doesn't have to soak it just make it moist. Once cut you wrap in black trash bags and duct tape. Then wrap in trash bag and duct tape again. After that is done it's easy to move without contaminating anything. I work on government projects and that's how they require you to do it. It really isn't that hard.

It is very different from alcohol, cig's, wood dust and other known carcinogins. Asbestos is a mineral not a chemical. It's been used in all kinds of materials and in each and every category the workers have developed mesothelioma/asbestosis. So did their wives and kids. All well documented. It was used for auto brake pads/shoes and a whole class of auto workers got cancer. To downplay its danger after all these years is beyond me. Science is science. Ignore it at your own risk. Lots of crap we use, chemicals etc. should be banned. It's not demonizing, fear mongering it's putting our health above some SOB scamming to make $. And, it's been known to cause cancer for decades, since the 1920's and 30's, and nothing was done.

My father was a welder. Worked building ocean liners, jets etc. Between the asbestos insulation, protective gear and the flux almost all and I mean all his buddies died of cancer. He had 3 different types of cancer since he was 45. He was a tough SOB so made till he was 87 so it didn't really get him. But, little stories don't tell the real facts anyway. Do it right for yourself, family and other people who may be affected.

You only get once chance at life. This would be a shitty thing to cut it short. Call the pro and sleep easy. Btw my grandfathers brother died of mesothelioma. Got it from being in the navy.

ummm guys, need someone to give me a refer a person or company that does it....
Snap a pic of what you have. Did you have it tested and confirmed to be asbestos? Is it the duct or the white tape sealing the joints?
