So I just got through the worst aquarium hobby sales experience I've had so I thought I would share to save some people from a similar experience. I'm in the middle of setting up a 70g mixed reef (we're transitioning from our 40br and a 20g tank in our bedroom) so we needed some hardware.

I ordered a set of JBJ ocean pulse wavemakers and a 800w heater from SoCalTropical and was happy to support a local company. I made my purchase through paypal. I received the proper "transaction complete" message through paypal, but suspiciously nothing from SoCal. Sometimes you don't get anything from the original vendor, so I decided to wait and see.

At 5 days, I messaged SoCal via the only contact information available on their website and I tried their store via a phone number I had to look up on google (it's not listed anywhere on their site). No answer to either method. Not even a voicemail on the phone number. I started to get concerned, but I thought I'd give it another week before filing a formal complaint with paypal.

2 weeks passed... still nothing. No email, no call, no message via paypal (despite the vendors claim later that she tried to contact me). Then at the end of 2 1/2 weeks, just as I was about to file a fraud complaint, a package comes in. I am relieved. I open it to find out they shipped ONLY THE WAVEMAKER! Unbelieveable... Worse still, there's nothing else in the box. No notice of delay of shipping, not even an invoice showing what order this is for? How unprofessional.

...but fortunately for me UPS requires a phone number from the vendor on the shipping label, so now there's a new phone number on the box I can call. I leave a voicemail explaining the time this has taken, the problem with the shipping, receiving absolutely zero information from them the entire time, etc...

4 more days pass. I should have filed a fraud claim with PayPal but what can I say, I'm too nice I guess. I called the new number and the store (from the google search) every one of those 4 days. Finally on the 4th day someone picks up the phone. She informs me that "she tried contacting me through PayPal" and the heater is on backorder. I tell her I've tried calling the store, emailing through the website, and calling the number UPS had all with zero response for over a month. She DOES NOT APOLOGIZE. She doesn't even feign apologeticness. She tells me she'll refund me through paypal if I "won't" wait. Um, yes? Give me my money back! Ironically - she has no problem refunding me via paypal... it takes her 20 minutes. So I guess perhaps she knows how to use paypal afterall.

So much for ordering locally - I picked up something from Amazon in 2 days! So - take it from me - don't order from So Cal Tropical Fish Outlet. They obviously don't know how to handle customer service, orders via their website, paypal, or really general common courtesy. It really is unfortunate, because I want to order locally, but obviously it doesn't work.

+1, there are much much better stores to visit. This place was pretty cool when Tom owned it, I bought everything from him but since the change in management its horrible. I will never shop here again either.. New owners have very poor customer service!

Sucks you had a bad experience with them. In the multiple times I've gone there both have been nothing but helpful and accommodating towards me

I've only been once, and mike was very nice. Maybe it was a one off thing.
I think the online sales is different from the storefront

Meh.......you all know it's Sexy Mike. He only open the store when he feel like it, so there really isn't a real store hour is there lol. Even on his website, it says sexy corals. You could have PM here, or R2R and he'll answer you back. Sorry you had a bad experience with him, a least give him another shot? I'll give you his cell if you PM me. Also, I really prefer to order stuff online now, rather then driving around...........

I was under the same impression that the online store is not the same as the store front
From what I understand. Mike keep some corals in his house, but most of them in his store. If you order online, you need to either PM him, or call him to schedule a time to pick it up either at his local store / near his house. He doesn't have a specific hours for his local stores, but always answer PM / text/ call on his cell. Now, I'm going to keep my **** out of this.

That's my understanding as well.

To OP: I'm about 4 miles from his storefront. If you ever order from him again I could pick it up for you

I think some people stop caring about customer service once they make too much money or once they're too established to care about one complaint. Those people under estimate and will eventually go out if business. Customer service is king. One happy customer will bring 10 by word if mouth. Take a hit once and the profit will roll in. Whether or not the OP bent his side if the story if not. I've heard enough to agree socaltropical is a 1 out if 5 star business. I am a patient guy myself and understand sh!t gets busy. But there's a limit. I'm more of a stay calm but you lost my business forever type guy. I once waited for Mac n cheese for 20 minutes before the b!tch told me they didn't have any. But she told the guy right behind me they were out. So I will never GO to KFC again because if that. KFC corp never even responded to my emailed complaint.

Well, I was about to order some expensive frags him. Better save my money.
I've never had a bad experience with Mike personally. He's always been really helpful and friendly when I go into his store. I've never ordered frags from him online, but apparently he has a "cult" following online of people ordering from him =). I would give him a chance, his corals are awesome.

Seems like one of these kinds of threads pop up about Mike every few weeks unfortunately. I've only met him once at MAX or RAP awhile back, seemed like a nice enough guy, ya prices are a bit steep, but hey that's not my concern. It's unfortunate because these threads, even if vendors get too big and don't care, steer new customers away from these business' and I'm sure not every case is always all Mike's fault. Sure, as the business he gets to take all the blame, and that's his responsibility, but occasionally there may have been some sort of error on both sides (not necessarily meaning this particular sitch). Luckily like was said, Mike has a very loyal following of people, that must feel like he gives them good deals and good service, so maybe we should all just give somebody a chance personally, and if you get burned, well then you know. But you could also end up with a new fave vendor, you never know till you try. Just my two cents, I personally have never purchased anything from Mike, but if I saw the right piece I'm sure I would. Would definitely love to see all his goodies in person one day.

There's always two sides to a story, here is ours. It doesn't matter if your order was $20 or $5000 I treat all orders the same. We value all of our customers equally. We are all adults here. I don't know what kind of woman you are but if you call me using profanity I am not about to sweet talk to you. When you demand a refund "give me my fu**ing money back." I will send you your money back without a problem. Yes, leave out the way you speak to people over the phone and make it seems as if you're "too nice." You called my personal cell and I apologize for not answering the first time. Within minutes I gave you a call back and guess who didn't answer this time.

Received order June 9th
Shipped item June 16
Customer received package June 20th
Don't know where she got the 2.5 weeks from.
