An extension cord from a power inverter off my truck battery powered 3 maxijets (1200) and a mag 5 for my skimmer. I had the truck running for a hour or so--we had no juice for about 6 hours the first nite--to make sure it didn't die. I need a bigger inverter to run the heaters but temp's dropped to 72 degrees so power came on just in time.

sanh usually car batteries are starter batteries which are used for starting the car and from there the car alternator will give the car its electricity.

What people should use are sealed lead acid battery which are made for constant draining of power. Usually these sealed lead acid battery are for solar panels and those small electric cars. Put an inverter on these battery and they should run your pumps for a very long time.

What you would want to run is a deep cycle batt, deep cycles are made to be drained and then recharged. A regular car battery isnt

I'm using a regular car battery with my Vortechs. Should power one Vortech for a week. Besides the wind storm last week we don't normally get power outages out here in California. I used a regular car battery vs. a deep cycle battery which costs more and warrantied a lot less. If power outages were the norm then I would get a deep cycle battery

Can you share with me on how your car battery is setup to use with the Vortech's? Is there a special converter cable, etc? Sorry but I'm not an electrical genius :)
Thx!

The charger is a float charger you can get from Harbor Freight for around $15. They go on sale regularly and google the 20% coupon you can use as well. Float chargers won't damage the battery by constantly charging.

The only hard part to get is a 1.3mm jack. I found an old phone charger that fits the 1.3mm jack on the Vortech. You can always purchase the jack from Vortech. Splice the wire and one is positive (middle jack) the other wire is negative.

Costco has the cheapest auto battery with a decent warranty. Since most of the Costco batteries were the same price I chose one that fits my car. That way if my car battery dies I have a spare.

Here is a short diagram

Here is the link for float charger at Harbor Freight on sale for $9

http://www.harborfreight.com/automatic-battery-float-charger-42292.html

So this basically continually trickle charges the battery? Also, if this setup is always plugged into the MP40 controller... it's not causing damage to anything? I'm not sure how these things work but I'm thinking that when the power goes out the controller looks for alternative power automatically? And whatever is hooked up to it..it will use that as it's source? Sorry for the ignorant questions. I'm learning :)
