Fellow reefers,

I've just been notified by my power company that they will be shutting down my power on Halloween 10/31 all day.. After seeing this letter I immediately had a small panic attack. What about my tank??? They have no right!!! But luckily, for myself and the tank, I have some time to prepare for the power outage. That's where you guys come in (hopefully). What I'd like to do is borrow two VorTech battery backups from a local reefer or buy two used ones. I know I should already have them but never got around to it and now that the sh*ts about to hit the fan, I'm really regretting it. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds right now to buy two new ones or I'd already have them on a UPS truck on their way to save the day. If anybody could spare a pair for the day I would gladly rent them from you! The sooner I can figure this out the better. :help (2): :help (2):

All you really need are a couple of portable air pumps and air stones to get the gas exchange in the tank.

That sounds pretty simple to me. I like that idea. You don't think I'll need any flow in the tank? the power company says it will be off from 7am-7pm.

I just went thru 10 hours shutdown at my area. I had two portable air pumps for big tank and one for small tank. Everything survived. Do you have a chiller for your tank? If you do. Unplug it before the shutdown. My chiller started backup at default temp. Which killed one of my acro because temp got to 67 degrees.

Gas exchange is more important. The tank will be fine.

Sounds good guys. Thanks for the advice!! I appreciate it! Glad to see an example of it working without a flaw. Good tip on the chiller too as I run one.

You can rent a generator from Home Depot for like $60-80 for 24hrs and send in your receipt to the power company. Tell them you had animals that need power to stay alive. They reimbursed me when my power went out.

My power company also notified me that they will be shutting off power for 24hr.. its happening tomorrow and now I need to frantically figure something out today. I know should had thought about this earlier!!

Seems like just getting a portable air pump worked for some of you? Mind linking me to what you guys used? Hopefully it's available locally where i can just pick one up after work today. Other options I've been thinking are 1) gas generator 2) cig lighter plug power inveter. I have an EV car so battery should hold up.

thoughts?

They sell those @ petsmart. Just make sure your house doesn't get too cold... some wrap like a blanked around the tank and cover it as well so the heat doesn't leave too quick.

Where in Redondo are you? I'm off of Anza and Torrance if you want to borrow a generator. It should be enough to power your tanks' life support (water pump and heater) and your fridge.

I tried to order the battery powered air pump off amazon for same day delivery but couldnt find anything that could get to me in time. It would be awesome if petsmart carried it but i don't see anything on their website. Will try and swing by on my lunch break to check anyways.

Really appreciate the offer Mike! If i cant find a battery power airpump I may take you up on your offer. Does the generator just run off regular unleaded gasoline?

Ended up buying two of these topfin battery operated pumps and dropped them in.

everything survived for the 6hrs power was out! besides temp dropping down to 74 this seems to be the way to go for short outages that are known in advance. I'm looking into picking up either a Jebao or Gyre battery pack for the future though.. Thanks for the tips guys!
