I have two pre-quarantined wrasses arriving tomorrow from Dr. Reef: a blue star leopard wrasse (Macropharyngodon bipartitis) and a yellow "coris" wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus).

Caveat is that two of each are being shipped. Mike from Dr. Reef's Quarantined fish is going to trial a variation in shipping methods to see if survival is improved for the leopards and Halichoeres wrasses. I can't add three or four wrasses to my tank.

So there MIGHT be two alive-on-arrivals of each tomorrow. If they are alive and survive through acclimation (multi-day), I want to find homes for them ASAP.

I have a tank set up as a "landing pad" for the wrasses that will be salinity matched to their bag water. Details on the tank below if interested. I will add the alive-on-arrival wrasses to the tank and let them relax in ~2" of sand. They will be fed hatched BRS baby brine shrimp, Reef Nutrition Mysis Feast, ROE and Pods, and TDO pellets. I will slowly raise salinity to my tank parameters by 0.002sg per day. Once acclimated to 1.026sg and eating, I will take two (my pick) for my tank, and the other two need to be sold.

QT'd yellow coris wrasse will be $60
QT'd blue star leopard wrasse will be $70

If interest is high, I will start waiting lists for each. I will update this thread with survival status.

Details on "landing pad" tank:
The tank has rocks from my clean system that were removed weeks ago and left in saltwater without light. They look clean by all appearances (still coraline on them, but no visible algae). The tank has a mix of new sand and sand from a tank breakdown that has been rinsed clean with tap water then RODI water--the broken down tank was quite clean with minimal algae. None of my tanks have ever shown signs of Ich, Brook, Velvet, etc.

Unfortunately, the second blue star leopard wrasse didn't make the trip, and it's looking like the first blue star leopard is on its way out. Healthy-looking bodies, just likely banged itself in the head to death.

The yellow coris wrasses are still a wild card. First one looks like it is still alive and might make it today. The second I haven't seen yet since it was shipped in sand and is still buried (alive or dead). Will update.

So far, it looks like we have 2 yellow coris wrasses alive and in acclimation, buried in sand. The blue star leopard wrasse might pull through, but still looking like a long shot.

Good news, both Halichoeres chrysus are alive and hunting baby brine shrimp together:

The blue star leopard wrasse went into the sand or under a rock. So I don't know when or if I will see her, but she was swimming, albeit erratically and possibly injured, before she went into hiding, so fingers crossed!

does he ship with sand in the bag?
He and I have been discussing this. This was a replacement for my previous M. bipartitis that came with a dislocated jaw and died during acclimation. We discussed doing a trial run: one M. bipartitis in a black bag, one in a bag with sand. I also ordered the H. chrysus and same trial. All bags were meant to be a bit extra deflated so they don't hit a taut "wall" when they freak out. On that point, I think it doesn't matter much as I suspect the leopards bolt straight down to the hard bottom and break their beaks.

I'll report back to him that the black bag leopard was DOA while the sandbag leopard was alive, although possibly overstressed--we will see how it goes. I think the sand helps.

Hope they pull through for you! I bought a pintail fairy wrasse from Reef Factory US today and it didn't even last the car ride home. Was upside down and breathing hard from stress/some jumping in the bag. I think it jumped at just the right angle to injure itself. Wrasses can be so finicky/sensitive. Sucks losing something that wasn't even put in the tank yet

That's really unfortunate, sorry! I think with some wrasses, it's still best to get them locally, although pre-QT'd fish are also a great value. I won't try another leopard in shipment and will set up a QT system if/when I want another.

Update, yellow coris wrasses still alive as of 5:30pm today (when I left office). Will see how they are in the AM. Before leaving, I had them eating hatched brine shrimp, Reef Nutrition ROE + Pac Pods + Arcti Pods and both were eating well. Unfortunately, I disturbed the new sand and all the water clouded up again. Hopefully settled by tomorrow.

Good news! The M. bipartitis popped her head out of the sand this morning. Got scared when I moved and did a 180 back into the sand, but that's a good sign!

The yellow coris wrasses have been out and about hunting--having to dump Reef Nutrition food in, because there's no pod population in this "landing pad" tank.

More good news. Dropped by the office this AM and the blue star leopard came out of the sand and stayed out while I was feeding:

Not sure if she's in the clear yet, but much better prospects than 2 days ago!

The two yellow coris wrasses are acting totally normal and eating well.
