I would say for something practical a 400 watt halide. If you were willing to put in more you could do a plasma. Rumor has it that AI is working on a practical plasma system for aquariums.

Depends on what you want to keep and what your budget is. A little more info might help.

What corals you plan on keeping will determine the amount of (and therefore the type of) light you go with.

If you only want simple mushrooms and softies ~24" or deeper then T5's will probably be fine. If you want a brighter tank, or wish to keep higher-light requiring corals, then you will need the extra penetrating-power of a 250+watt metal halide or some type of LED fixture.

If interested in LED's, I sell a really nice LED fixture: (55) diodes at 2watts/each, fans, seperate white/blue power-cords, really sharp, crisp light and great penetration. I have (2) of these on a clients 38" deep 160gallon and they are gorgeous. Only $190/each. If interested I can send you more info and specs.

Yeah I'm interested too... I need new lights and to be quite honest, I was going to post a thread like this.. I have a 48" tank but pretty deep.
And was wondering what I would need too.

T5's are fully capable of fulfilling any light requirement needed by even the most light demanding coral. You can easily get as much wattage worth of fluorescents as MH, plus you can run it closer due to less heat. Not to mention infinitely more options of colors achievable through different bulb combos.

If you go LED I would suggest going with something with more watts and controllable. Also with more color choices.
