bio pellet question.

Every 2 days or less the pellets keep clumping together with minimal movement. I have plenty of flow and they always start out tumbling great but then i check a day later and all clumped. I have tried 2 diff types of pellets with the same results. Any ideas?

What reactor is it? Which biopellets are u using? Some reactors work better with different shaped pellets. I had the same problem when I was using the Aquamaxx reactor with the barrel shaped Warner Marine Pellets.

I used aquamaxx reactor with those same pellets no issues... its the pump even if you think it has enough flow doesn't mean it has enough flow to make it tumble. I dumped my marineland and added a tunze, no more issues...

i worry though that the tumble is 2 violent on full speed. does it matter how rough the tare moved around? If nit ill try and see if that fixes it.

you cant tumble them to much but the lower flow you have going in the reactor the more po4 you will eat.
the Bactria on the pellets eat nitrates 32 time faster then they eat phosphates, so the slower the flow = eating more po4 the faster = eats more nitrates.
so the best thing is to have the least amount of flow you can but still maintain a good tumble.
a good way to have tumble + low flow is with a recirculating reactor.
the auqamaxx is a good reactor for removing nitrates but not so much on phosphates the water go in and out of the reactor to fast.

Thanks for all the info!! really helpful. Thats why id like a slower tumble but get so mad when out of nowhere they are clumped.

bio pellet question.

well what y'all think?
Tumble looks super violent to me. I like to have mine tumble slow and steady.

Another thing that u have to factor in is the amount of pellets your using. I bet if that reactor was half full of pellets, u could crank the flow way up, and the pellets would be tumbling perfectly. How big is your system? Maybe u should look into running a smaller BP reactor. If u want the best bang for your buck, look at the CADLights bio pellet reactor. IMO they are the best ones on the market. Its a lot easier to control how fast the pellets tumble, and my CADLights reactor has NEVER clumped. Recirculating reactors are the way to go with Bio pellets.

bio pellet question.

That reactor was probably designed to work with X amount of pellets. When you only run a tiny bit, u have to keep the flow low, so they end up clumping. Try adding more pellets if u can. Careful though, u will need to increase your feeding if you do

yea my tank is 225 i just have heard that adding to many pellets to quickly is dangerous.
Have you had bio pellets before? Why you want bio pellets in the first place? Yeah what Nick said it need more pellets... In my 150 I have at least twice as much as that and I got a bacterial bloom lol took less than 8 hrs since I have a UV sterilizer then all went well.

I want bio pellets to lower phosphate and nitrate. The are currently alway between .5-.15 depending on when I do my water change. I have a huge uv so maybe it's not a big deal to add more just don't wanna shock the system.

Why not use a phosphate reactor? Bio pellets helps but not as much as you think... I run bio pellets and aquamaxx phosphate out pro

Go slow adding pellets, also try soaking them in ro/di water before adding them. I have a 250g tank and I have probably 2 to 3 times as many pellets. But ya I started the pellets when there was no coral, so I wasn't worried. Keep adding them slowly, and don't forget to feed heavy.

If you run gfo with pellets you hender the bio pellets productivity. Once I said F it and took gfo offline. Phosphate and nitrate have been 0 and I feed like crazy.

Thanks, what do you consider feeding heavy? I feed 2 frozen cubes of Mysis or something most nights and pellets here and there. Also what do you consider going slow adding pellets a bit once a week?
