hey guys i have a question about biopellets.. when u get an algae bloom with these, does that mean that you need to change the pellets? or is that just the start of the biopellet cycle and that in a few more weeks all the algae will start to disappear?

Ive never got any kind of bloom with bp. Did you discontinue the use of your gfo when you put your bp online? If you even run gfo. But if you did that was a no no. What kind of flow do you have running thru the pellets?

I didnt get any hair algae when I set up my BP either. Most important thing to remember is the hose exiting your reactor should be as close to ur skimmers pump as possible.

My Tank Build
#5
The whole time I ran pellets I fought hair algae. I even starved my sps to death and still had hair algae. Befor pellets I had never had GHA. At the end of my tanks live I was going through $100 a month in GFO fighting phosphates. My RO/DI was good and read 0 Po4. But my tank was constantly at 0.08 PO4. I was running a skimmer that was over rated by a 100 gallons. The only thing that ever helped my fight GHA was a product by Red Sea called NO3-PO4:X or nopox (for short).

i just started using gfo after i took off my pellets because of the algae but sounds like i screwed up and should have left the BP on and the algae would have gone away on its own?

If you had an algae bloom it was because you added too many BPs at once. BPs are a carbon source for bacteria. You need to find the balance where the algae can grow, but not take over. That really bad algae bloom can wipe out your tank, if the algae grows really quickly it will suck out all the oxygen from your water. I did the same thing with vodka once. In the morning i had a few dead shrimp and my fish did not look happy. I dont know why so many people LOVE BPs, just run vodka. Its safer and easier IMO...Plus it literally does the EXACT same thing.
