I recently bought a green brittle star for 10 bucks. Its a nice size for my 75 but i jave heard that some of them eat fish and crabs. Should i be worried about this or was this an isolated incident. Its pretty fast at night when lights go out.
Am i in the clear or should i remove

Hey Jesse,

There is some really good info on green brittle stars here and also more on the that link here with opinions from the great Albert Thiel. I'm sure the mods will delete it though, good info isn't king here anymore...

I had just finished reading about this and thats what got me worried. But i want people personal experiences. Like flame angels are said to eat coral but lots of people have them with no problem.

I don't have any personal experience with the "green" but from what I have heard is that they become a problem when they get older and bigger. I would measure the costs against the gains dude. There are other inexpensive reef safe options for brittles, though I understand you already have this guy in you system. Good luck Jesse.

mine is about 18" across when spread out (but rarely that opened up) and i haven't had any issues with it eating fish, unless it was dead / dying already.

it DOES, however, aggressively go after pellets when it hits the floor, and will climb over LPS and grab it out of their hands if it can. it'll also aggressively go after clam on half shell.

also, on crabs. I have 3 emerald crabs in the tank, smallest one is about 1.5" across (spread out, so it's pretty small), and the big one is about 3" across (again, spread out, so it's a decent size).

the brittle star shares the same cave with the small crab, and has never made any signs of aggression toward it. i've even see the emerald pick stuff off the star's retrieving arm.

I have two also as big as Jeff, I have small fish like chromis and large fish like a Naso, they are all there had them for 6 months now... they only come out at night time. Not every sea creature will behave the same so just keep an eye out if you are worried.

Im more like interested than worried. I feel its gonna be fine. My star is maybe 10 inches from one foot to the other spread out. So its probably not gonna do much. Just wanted to hear people out with their luck

I have a very large green brittle star and things may or may not have gone missing because of him. It's hard to say because I also have three big @$$ nems in there too. I'm pretty sure I've lost a couple shrimp and a couple fish over time but I can't say I've seen what or if any animal was "preditated" on.
