I added to green bubble tip anemone to my reef tank. It stayed put for a couple of days now its slowly starting to move around. How much of a risk am I taking by keeping it? I am worried it will eventually sting some of my nice zoos or SPS. Who else has one and has it caused any issues? Thanks

2 biggest risks are:

1. It will roam and sting corals in its path as you mentioned.
2. It will roam and get sucked into a powerhead which could wipe out your entire tank.

Best thing to do to take proactive matters into your own hands before 1 or 2 happen. Place the nem on a specified stand alone island so that even if it wanders down the rock, it gives you enough time to catch it and place back on its island. Hth.

You could also try to adjust the powerbeads to keep the hem stationary. Nems like random flow and good lighting; if you can manipulate the environment to achieve those, you may have a good chance at a stationary nem. IME, the nems I've had moved about for the first few hours while getting situated but then settled within a couple hours.

I currently have 7 news and they haven't moved at all in the last 4 weeks they've been in there. One actually shares a rock with a mushroom colony

i've gotten good at building rock forts with rubble when my RBTA looks like it wants to move.

i've also given up trying to control it too much. they do what they want.. >_<

I agree make a nice fitting cave for it on its own little spot with moderate flow but good lighting.. it should stay around the area if it likes it.. had that problem a few weeks ago but it stayed and now my clowns are ruff housings it lol

Thanks. How strong is their sting? Will they pretty much kill anything they touch? I'm sure LPS would be much less affected the SPS but im just trying to get an idea.

Regardless of what u do, if the Nem wants to move, it will move. I planned on having a full SPS tank, so I decided not to have any nems in my tank. Typically if your tank is healthy and the Nem has been in your tank for awhile (established), it shouldn't move. But there's always a possibility. IME, nems usually move the first few days/weeks they are in a tank.

really depends more on what they're stinging, and for how long.

some corals are more resilient than others.

if the coral is only passing by, no big deal. the coral will recover, but if it decides to stop and whip away at corals, the coral will be in trouble.

in my tank, the SPS seem to not fare that well against the RBTA. the polyps retract and lose tissue where it touches on a regular basis.

on the other hand, i've had the same BTA park ON TOP of 2 mushrooms for a couple months, and the mushroom came back after the nem moved off.

Do this..

I keep 6-9 nems at any given time , w Lps and a few sps. Barnacle Island FTW! :) I've also used big empty snail shells.. That I can poke into rock work where I want em. Once they're attached inside shell, mine never come off :)
