i'm pretty sure none of you guys remember this build thread...

http://www.socalireefs.com/forums/showthread.php?74468-build-thread-V-can-t-sleep&highlight=

anyways... one day a cattleya died, so i wanted to redo the entire tank... i captured the little guy in a container made of a PVC pipe, and i capped it... threw it on my couch, redid the entire tank with new plants and crap.... and when i went to shake that guy out of the pipe, he david copperfield'ed me... i don't know how he got out, or where he went... i tore my house up looking for him... oh well... probably dead now... LOL....

so i kept maintaining the tank until i just didn't want to anymore and let everything die... well, i got a gnat infestation in there... it was bad... so i cleaned it out and now has some paphiopedilum, phalaenopsis and a tolumnia in there... i had some nepenthis in there too, but i threw them all outside to drink some rain water...

anyways... here it is now...

so i have an idea on how i'm going to rebuild this thing... i'll have a moving waterfall, some floating islands of moss, the bottom will have water, a beta, some mini lily pads and real filtration... so... i want to drill this tank and have a sump... it's not going to be fancy like a reef setup... LOL>.. probably a bucket of some sort... anyways... you guys know any bulkheads that will work that are 1/4" or so...? i have glass drill bits that size, and i don't want to use gigantor bulk heads...

if you have any ideas let me know.. but for sure, i'm going to keep this thread updated step by step... also some videos... since it's plant related, i'll make a how to video later on...

so, what you guys think...??? input...?

edit: WTF were you doing over here....? LOL...
Tank looks dope!! Yea it's easy I had a 60g discus planted tank 5 years ago. I did hydroponics for 2 years. I had a grow room n have Co2 tank and diffuser. I heard $10-20 flood lights will work.

On my way back from DT LA n got hungry so I hit the Golden Corral 🤣 on my way back

i also have 1/4 and smaller drill bits... i drill through glass all the time... i use them to make semi hydroponic containers for my orchids...

also thinking about using 1/4 uniseals... that way i don't have to use rigid PVC.... but not sure now... might just make a small cheapie waterfall for this tank.... well, i'm planning on putting a deer scarer in it, so i might just use and hide a small pump inside the whole setup... hate it, but whatever... but i just found this....

OMG THIS!!!!!!!!!...

I think that is super cool. You are more than handy enough to pull that off. I have all the tools... Not a Dremel, but real life big boy tools. Wanna borrow, lemme know. Actually be kinda fun to do something like this. Like I said, you have my #..... I am more than willing to help. Probably be the coolest vertical breeder, orchid, beta, gecko tank like... EVER...

no, the tall tank won't have a betafish... just a mossy ground... some red eye tree frogs... maybe a crested gecko.... i dunno... and this stuff looks crazy easy... but, i don't want to do it with the black frame around the tank.... i rather remove all of it... make it look rimless and fancy...

DO IT!!!...

was thinking about how that guy silicones the glass to the frame. To hold water, I think I would glue the glass from INSIDE the frame. Water pressure, albeit minimal would help hold the lower glass in place. Just a thought...

my thoughts exactly... leaks for days i bet... or a ton of nasty gross looking silicone...

i'd just want to make it rimless, since no water pressure so the brace isn't needed... tile the backgrounds, add some great stuff and coconut coir and start hanging plants and stuff... oh man, should be dope... just very hard to light up...

Got this small tank from my friend. Thinking freshwater beta fish and if possible planted. By any chance do you know what the ph is good for a beta and grass carpet?

straight RO/DI will work fine... don't buffer for a beta... they aren't that delicate... also, grass carpet is going to need bright lights and CO2... a carpet that is easy to grow is what i had in my tank... i forgot what it was called... i think S. repens... stauragenia repens or something like that... doesn't have a common name... i used a cheap LED bulb, and dosed flourish excel... very easy to grow... all other "carpets" need CO2....

Nice I have co2 tank n diffuser. Just trying to figure out if I should do SW or freshwater. I have an led and a 2 bulb t5 fixtures. What other plants do you recommend that are easy. What substrate is good?

The previous owner really cared Cus he put in the overflow. Most picotopes I've seen r using HOB.

use ADA amazonia.. or any ADA soil... bomb stuff... don't use anything else...

and remember, betta need very low flow... my tank had too much flow for them...

if you're going to do CO2, then you can pretty much have any plant you want... get some baby tears for the carpet... and micro sword for the background...
