You want to use the "Custom" white balance mode. It's the one all the way to the right that looks like a little square between two triangles. Google custom/white/balance/canon/xs and you'll get a zillion hits, there's even videos on YouTube for it.

You go to your settings and custom white balance. It will ask you to choose a picture.. Choose the one that you took

Was the pic you took under white, actinic, or blue LED''s?
That's the funny thing about the custom white balance.. It's supposed to tell your camera what white is under different lighting conditions . So leave your lights how you usually have them and give it a go... But in all honesty the best way to get good pics is to practice and figure out how your camera works..

pandimus is correct about the whole custom white balancing thing. like he stated before make sure the frame "picture" is full of the white object in your tank. jessesoto33

I always use aperture priority (Av) then you can use your clicker knob to adjust the aperture
OK so I use (AV) then add a bunch of white PVC to tank, then take multiple pics with different aperture settings, then go to, settings and custom white balance, and choose the right pic, right? then what?

Did the camera come with digital photo professional cd or something? That's what I use with my t3i to correct white balance.

I first set custom white balance on the camera, I have white cards but prefer to take a pic of a yellowish wall so the pics come out more blue and closer to the real color. In my case if i do a straight white card all the pics look like they were taken in daylight.

When I have that set up, I then take the clearist pic I can and save it in raw. You can do full auto if you aren't familiar with the other settings.

I then upload the pics to my computer and use the supplied program to do any white balance corrections with the color wheel. If a pic is too blue you could move it closer to white, too green move it closer to purple. I've tried messing with lightroom but couldn't figure it out lol

This is how I do it and it kinda works. I can take a decent pic but not as good as some I've seen. If you got the program it could be a good place to start

Go to page 90. You can use a piece of computer paper under your light for the white object. What you are doing is taking a picture of the piece of paper (which will look a weird blue color under your lighting) and telling the camera to adjust the levels so that a photo of a white paper will look white even under your weird blue reef lighting.

Take one pic of PVC in tank. Don't worry about aperture.. Set it as custom white balance.. Then set your white balance to custom. Start taking pics

Personally i think its way easier ti shoot in raw and use photoshop eye dropper on something close to white like your sand to white balance it. Then it doesnt matter if your white source is at a different depth of the tank or not. You are always matching to the current light setting that way.

It helps to set the color temp on your camera to the lower if not lowest setting. And also slowing down the shutter speed to let more light in but you will need a tripod or you pictures will turn out blury do to movement. Turning the flow off can help to get clear pictures along with the above.

This is just what has worked for me, hope this helps
