This heat wave is killing me! Don't think I can afford to buy a chiller, proper, at the moment but if anyone has one I can borrow til things cool down, that would be awesome.

I don't know how to reply or see who left this comment but flippers are frowned upon here. ;)

Note: I'm a supporter on this page, have donated to others on this forum in their times of need, am a paid member to 4 clubs, and do BUY things from others on this and other forums and stores.

A part of the hobby for me is continual tinkering and picking up things from other members, meeting them and learning.

I provide systems, goods and support to others that need it, as well.

I don't mind being called out for grabbing free stuff, but at least have the balls to PM me rather than leave an anonymous message.

Eric are you using fans? That will help a lot . Just have an ato so your salinity stays stable.

My fan has been running almost nonstop the last month. Its been pretty hot in Tustin. I can imagine Redlands is a wee bit warmer. ;0

You need to specify how big of a chiller you need because that matters :); I guess people can search through your posts and find out how big your tank is; assuming you posted that somewhere here or there;

I have three systems currently:

100 Gallon corner tank (basically an all-in-one, acrylic) <- the one that started it all, bought for $50... a few thousand dollars later and I'm a reefer. It's not in it's prime. (it's been better) Lighting and chemistry have been my main issues here.

55 Gallon. This was a free tank and has mostly been created off of free (or cheap) items. It was an experiment in rock only filtration at first (minimalist approach). Literally was just 1/2 full of water and a ton of live rock and a powerhead. Ran many months like this and was great. No real coral to speak of until recently, when I got a lot of free livestock. I added fish gradually and just last night completed an overflow (hang on syphon type, tank is not drilled) to sump to hang-on-back refuge. (The return pump of the sump goes into the input of the refuge!) The flow of this part is slow, hoping to add another overflow later but there is a powerhead and I stuck an internal submersible filter into the main tank as well. I just picked up a great combo light (t5, MH, LED) for this but with this heat, I'm afraid to run it!

and a "frag" tank, this is the start of my "tri-level" system. So far it consists of a 2x2 frag tank over a 90 gal sump. (the sump actually has most of the wildlife!) There is another 2x2 frag tank on that second shelf but it's self contained and only has a few mangroves and algae in it so I'm not concerned about that portion at all.

I have thought to combine the contents of the 55 and the "frag" system into a bigger tank (I just picked up that 180 stand, after all!) The overall cost of doing that would probably be less than trying to buy multiple chillers and would probably result in a more stable system as well. Heck, I might put everything together into that and give away the excesses. ;) But that will take some time and it'll be cooler by then.

I am not. The temp on everything in the AM before lights come on is 84-85. Right now I have my office open and a fan blowing in the colder morning air but I'm still afraid to turn on the tank lights.

I do a lot of manual top off on one of my systems but I'd really like to eliminate more humidity in that room, since it's my computer and editing room.

See other post about probably combining. That would end up out of my office and would probably be the best solution in the long run.

I have a old drop in chiller I bought but haven't used it. It been sitting for a few year and you will need an apex or single stage controller to use it.

I would think a window AC unit might be a better investment and several chillers for all the tanks. Couldn't your keep the ambient temp around 75 and run fans? Maybe try Costco?

+1 on lots of frozen water bottle or like juice containers. Depending on your tank 1 large one can bring you down 5 degrees .

I think the issue was the funds to buy a chiller. He is trying to get a loaner, those window units (that actually work) are more then he could get a used chiller on here, so he would be back to the original issue, funds...

I think even you burrow one by the time you spend on the electric on running it. I probably be the same amount if you bought a used one hehehe..
