I usually buy RO/DI from my LFS. I check the TDS everytime I buy RO/DI. The last one was 20. I ran out of fresh water tonight so I went and bought 5 gal of the glacier grocery water. The TDS is 8. RODI cost .50/gal vs .30/gal.

I would not use distilled water, thought the tds is lower the ammonia has not been removed. Big problem for your tank, will kill your bacteria and eventually your tank will crash. Just my .02

20 is super high. buy from a different lfs if you're positive your jug is clean. Anything over 5 won't go in my tank. I shoot for 0, and change media when I see 1 or 2.

Did the ro come in its own container?

I think you've figured it out for yourself. Your LFS doesn't flush their membranes and change their cartridges. You can get better quality water at a better price from the Glacier machine.

Did you check the tds while both waters were in the same container? If so then the lfs is really lame but if measured 20 in one container, which would add to the tds and checked the tds as the Glacier water flowed out of the spout that would not be a fair comparison.

Basically comes down to the glacier units being serviced pretty regularly as opposed to the lfs you're currently buying your water from. They should be changing out the membranes and di more often but like most lfs they don't due to the cost I'm assuming. Neither of those are the ideal source of reef water but maybe look for a lfs with better quality and lower tds.

Bring your TDS meter to the LFS and measure water coming out of the Spigot as containers are contaminated if any salt water has ever touched the container the TDS meter will not have accurate reading. I only run 0 TDS, when mine shows 1 I change my filters.
