Hey SCR, my sailfin and a few of my other fishes are getting fat. I personally like them fuller, but I just wanted to see if anyone lost a fish due to obesity. I have some pics but it was hard to catch them at a good angle.
Thoughts? Thanks!

mine are fat too, the leopard wrasse looks more like a soccerball than a fish. I have a fasting day every week, that seems to help. They don't know when they are full and fish can overeat at a single time and cause themselves medical issues. Are you overfeeding by accident or to get past the aggressive ones to the slower ones?

Nitrates are high but its a fowlr. Maybe I need to slow down on feeding. Theres no aggression issue and everyone gets fed. I am trying to fatten up the blonde naso, and in the process, every other fish is getting fat except the naso. I guess my next question is are the nasos slow growers? Thanks!

Growth depends on feeding regimen, at least for large tangs like a naso. So the more you feed the faster it will grow,IMHO.

My purple tang is obese, but I don't know if he has any health issues. He's just a wuss and hides from my Moorish Idol.
That's a good thing though. .. tangs can take a beating, idols can dish out but not take it. My tang killed my idol after about 6 months of being together.

Back on track to the thread just think about it like people over eating, same thing. Just like mentioned before for the most part fish just don't know when to stop eating

Can fish get too fat & die of obesity? Possibly, but unlikely. More common is undernourished fish getting too weak to fight off ich. I consider polluting the water bad husbandry, not overfeeding. & like people fish can be fat but undernourished, or under-excersised. Have u seen how fat fish are in the wild?

The last i check my nitrates were high but this was when i was treating the ich problem. I havent checked for nitrates recently but ive been doing 20% wc every 3 weeks. They look happy and hungry all the time. I just set up a refugium today with some chaeto that organism hooked me up with last week.

It's a FOWLR. How much are you even feeding? And what are you feeding. If you're just constantly keeping the seaweed clipped on the glass that's fine. If you just toss in a pinch of pellets 5-8 times a day that is also fine.. Spiralina Brine is great for tangs. It all depends what you're feeding.

Unless your nitrate level is causing algae growth, I wouldn't start to feed less.. Your fish enjoy eating. To answer your question if it's too much... you could over too the protein and give them too much meat. But if you want to keep your tangs fed, just keep up with seaweed.

I feed nls algaemax and marine pellets 4 times a day and gf feeds half to one sheet of sushi nori once a day. I feed mysis/chopped seafood soaked in kent Zoe and garlic extreme on weekends. I have about 10 fishes 3-7 inches in a 125gallon

I don't really measure how much I feed. I just feed for like 2-3min, a pinch at a time until they don't go crazy for food anymore

i dont see any problem with over feeding them as long as you keep the water in check - i love them fat belly thick fish - especially the naso

They'll always be hungry lmao Feeding three times a day is okay as long as you're doing water changes, have a good skimmer and run phosphate media like gfo.

Dang, mine usually get fed once a day, sometimes twice. Pellets.
