Hi I would like to see if anyone in the LB area with a 120gal size range tank runs without a chiller. If you could list ur lighting,ac or not, and ur summer Tank temps. I am going to be setting up a 120gal reef in a house with no ac by CSULB area as temps very in LB. I haven't pick out lights yet, If I can get away with no chiller by going with T5's I would go that way.

Thanks for any info

I dont live in long beach but in the summer time its a lot hotter in the I.E then long beach. I run 10x80w T5 and dont run a chiller. I use fans pointed directly at the water in the sump to cool down my tank. the only negative effect by this is that you evaporate a lot of water and thats what helps to cool down the water by evaporation. You can get away without having a chiller for sure. Running a chiller is costly and having to buy one is too. I do run my ac in the house when its really hot. my temp in my tank varies anywhere from 77-80. if its 105 degrees outside and i dont have my a/c on my temp will get to 82 but if I run my ac on a very hot summer day it will go down to 79. I save about 80-100 bucks a month on elec but it varies due to size of the tank. I stopped running my a/c in the middle of sept since it has'nt been that hot

Also a buddy of mine lives in diamond bar and runs a 400w on a 67g in the GARAGE with NO a/c and it gets very hot in there. especially in the summer. He has no chiller and the hottest it has ever got was 82. nothing more then that. Actually i have only seen it at 80-81 but im just saying 82 to be on the safe side. He only uses a fan to cool down his tank. I would highly recommend getting a ro/di set up so you can easily replace the water if you go this route.

p.s each tank is stocked with sps and never had any problems due to high temp

Chiller

Thanks Badfish,

I will just use fans on the sump then, the tank is going on the wall with the garage on the other side. So I will run a hose thru the wall and setup a ro system to fill up a trash can ato system. Do you think i could keep it under 82 with two 250mh and fans?

Thanks for info

David, I live in the LBC and have a 225 with a 60 gallon sump, no chiller. I only use a small fan on the sump. Tank is lit with 3 250MH lamps, but only 6 hours a day.

I have a 150g tank and a 60g sump in the garage. I use fans as well. My fan is connected to my controller. If one fan is not enough to cool my tank then the 2nd fan kicks in. On a hot day I can evaporate almost 3-5 gallons of water. If you park your car in the garage it will heat up even more so just prop you garage door open a few feet until it cools down.
I live in Rancho Cucamonga so it gets hot here during the summer. Only once during the 7 years I lived here that I had to take drastic measures (ice packs) to cool my tank was during Labor Day weekend 08 when it was 105 and very humid. When the humidity is high fans are not as efficient. That day a few LFS I know had massive losses as well.

I live in LB and have a 150 gal. My temp never went over 82 all summer long. I have no chiller and a small window unit which doesnt do all that much. I am running all T5 PCs
