I was wondering how well do fans above the tank help with heat? I just installed a retro T5 kit and noticed higher temp than usual

both.. Fans are good, but chiller is back up. Fans can only cool so much and they do cause a lot of evaporation. Chillers make your electric bill shoot through the roof.

It depends... If you do what I did and get a much larger chiller than is required for your tank, your electric bills wont go through the roof! I have a 75g and I have a 1/4hp Aquaeuro chiller on my tank, it never moves between 78 and 79 degrees. as for heat....I do have an MP40w on it so that helps, however, I have 2-250w hamilton MH's.

Get a larger chiller. So it cools the water faster and runs less. I keep my water temp at 76-78. My Chiller temp set point is at 79, so my chiller stays off pretty much all the way until summer months. I just unplug the chiller until I get close to the hotter months.

i like my fans, and they cool my tank down with no issues. I have 2x250w about 4" off the water and they cool the water off fine. I have them set on my RKL to turn off if water gets above 80.4 and off when it gets down to 80.0 and they run about half an hour every hour or so.

i'd get the fans, if you are keeping your inside air at 74 degrees that should be enough, also with t5 lights you should cool the endcaps with fans to prolong the life of the bulbs.

Fans are the most energy efficient way to go. My sump is in the garage where temps are 90 degrees in the summer. With fans only I can cool my tank to 80 degrees. The only time fans will not work are during the rare California humid days. Fans does not add extra heat to your room unlike chillers

Really depends on the size of your tank and the range of the temperature swings. An adequate amount of fans for your size of a tank can probably lower the temp about 2-4 degrees. If your tank is getting up to 84-86ish when the T5's are on, you should probably just get the chiller.

Fans = slightly lower temp, more evaporation (thus causing you to need to top-off more), small energy footprint

Chiller = any temp you want, no evap, insane energy footprint

I have been using fans only on my 125. Works well, I have my Apex turn on one Fan at 79, then a second one if the tank hits 80. For the last 4 weeks the temp swing has been between 78.5 (where the heater is set at) and 80.

I also run the house AC set to go on over 76.

Fans V. Chiller... The battle continues...

Here is the biggest difference I see. fans the temperature fluctuates up and down constantly (UNLESS YOU HAVE A CONTROLLER) and even still the temperature can fluctuate pretty good. With a chiller you are paying a little more, but it is absolute that your temperature won't fluctuate whether it's hot outside, or cold outside.

Other problems: fans use evaporation to cool the tank...therefore as the water evaporates off the room the tank it is in becomes humid. Also, they are inefficient in the way they cool... even though evaporation works well, sometimes it can work a little too well and as long as there is water in the tank the fans will continue to lower the temperature of the water. At the same time, the fan may not be enough on a super warm day and your tank temperature will still rise to dangerous levels.

Chillers basically eliminate all the guess work with temperature. They guarantee that the temperature for the most part remains constant. My temperature in my tank now doesn't even fluctuate a degree between day and nite hours and temperatures.
