Hi all! Hopefully one of you can answer this question: I was looking at getting a small chiller and was talking to someone who has a Pacific Coast CL-280 1/10HP unit they are willing to sell me. The question I have is that it says it for hydroponics, is it safe for a reef tank? It uses a titanium heat exchanger and the person selling it says it should be fine. What do you guys think?

I came across a hydroponics chiller i was going to pick up as well. Then i started thinking about the chemicals/fertilizer that they use. I'm not sure if running vinegar through it for awhile will clean all that out.

And Welcome!!!!

Great first post...

Hey, I'm a Portugee too! (Grandparents from the Azores, father from Fall River, Mass.)

As to the chiller, in hydroponics they tend to use nutrients including nitrates -- stuff that will make algae grow like crazy. Probably wouldn't stick to the titanium or plastic parts, but unless its a smoking hot deal, I wouldn't risk it, chiller like that seem to come up for sale here frequently.
