Help me out here. I'm getting mixed advice from google on feeding clams. Do they need to be fed or is photosynthesis enough?

Consensus on this is hard to come by. Here's some anecdotal evidence for you...my experience so far.

I've fed and not fed. I stopped feeding because my clams didn't react well to the feedings (used oysterfeast). Now i just depend on the nutrients in my water to feed them regardless of size. I've had one sub-3" maxima in my tank for 3 months now and have never fed it. When you think about it, in the ocean, they don't get spot fed...the water carries the nutrients they need to them. Keep your Nitrate below 10pp and your Phosphate below 0.05 but above 0.00 and there'll be plenty in the water to feed them.

I have 3 clams in my tank. All different sizes. Never fed a single one of them. If ur water parameters are decent and you have decent lighting, they will be fine.

I just got a tiny one at RAP and had the same question. Its like 1 1/2" maxima. I have one that's a lil bigger and it's been alive for months now. I occasionally blast the tank with h2ocean frozen coral food. I don't really see them "eating" though

I broadcast feed too but only when my nutrient level is too low. And I do it mostly for my SPS. IME this works better than spot feeding.

They're "eating" all of the time. They're filter feeders and are constantly sucking in water filtering it and releasing it back out. They're always eating, which is why I think keeping healthy nutrient levels is better than spot feeding.

Ya for people with low nutrient tanks, broadcast feeding is where it's at. However, people that don't run gfo, have big enough skimmers, and/or don't run bio pellets need to be careful, they can run into high nutrient problems if they are constantly broadcast feeding.

I'm running bio pellets with a big skimmer and I notice if I cut back on feeding for a few days, my zoos and chalices start looking pissed off. I do some broadcast feeding and up my fish feeding, and within a couple days everyone is back to being happy again.

Okay cool! I got a 2-3 inch crocea clam at RAP and I gave him some oyster meal today. He appeared to spit it out after a minute or so but he also had some sand on him so maybe he was coughing that out.

I was talking to the gorgeous girl from Clam Mania and she said there is no need to feed the clams... regardless of size... It will do good if you have good water parameters and it'll get some food when you feed the fish and corals.

I used to never feed my clams. even the small ones. I do spot feed my sps and sometimes will feed the clams if my daughter says so.
