Hey Guys,

Went to Seaside today for a great sale, 20 to 25 percent off of fish, coral and inverts. Needed to replenish my clean up crew, but in addition, my kids talked me into a large Clam! It's probably 5" or so and really nice looking.

Anyway, brought it home, acclimated and placed on sand bottom. I noticed my bi-color blennie being super aggressive towards its mantle causing it to retract, so I was fortunate enough to catch that SOB and place him in my sump.

Anyway, a little while later, I see white stuff being expelled by the clam and my fish are crazy over what ever it might be..... my Purple Tang is now hovering over the clam just waiting to be sprayed in the face.... oh wait. Sorry.

After Google-ing and YouTubing I think that it is spawning and not expelling due to stress, but not sure because of the initial assault by the bi-color.

Any thoughts? This is my first clam and I want to keep this guy alive. so any thoughts are appreciated! By the way, I am using Radion G2's over my tank which peak at 70% intensity during the day. Anyone have experience with Radion's and their Clams?

As always,

Thanks!

water change fresh carbon and test the system to check the parameters also maybe call the store to see what lvl they have their systems at but be carefull that may mean not that the clams is stressed it may mean that it might be dying so keep that in mind . Also depending on how much the clam spews it can polute the tank so be very carefull

+1 to what was said above. From my resarch, clams spawn when they are overly stressed.
Kind of like a last ditch effort to survive.. Be very careful as whatever it spews out, once it starts to decay, can/will nuke your entire system. Oxygen levels in your tank will be important. If you have an extra air stone, I'd drop one in and definitely add some carbon. I had an 11"-12" clam start to spawn when I brought it home. Couldn't see through the water within a few minutes, totally milky. Took it out and left it in a separate bin with heater and power head and air stone for a night and then once it acclimated, placed it back in the tank. Been fine since.

Thanks Guys..... All my parameters are fine.

pH 8.2
phosphates 0.02/0.00 at Reactor Output
ALK 9.23
Nitrates less than 5
Calcium 500
Mag 1400

Once I caught the Bi-Color, the clam's mantle has come out and it seems to be fine. I will check everything again tomorrow and do a water change just because and will go from there!

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

**** I just got a huge clam in my tank .. It's a buddy's holding it for him but I hope it dose okay in my tank defiantly keeping an eye on it .. What I do like about clams is that they eat a lot of ammonia and nitrate that they help with the bio load :D
