Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum, so I'll keep my question short. I have two percula clown fish that arrived about 2 weeks ago. One likes to stare at the back wall of the tank whereas the other hangs out near the polyps. I picked up a couple of anemones but the fish have not checked them out yet. Is the staring at the coral or the back panel a sign that they wish to host the object?

I really would like to see them happy. Any comments, recommendations welcome :)

Thank you!

first off welcome! feel fre to ask any questions, short or long.
what type of anemone did you get? that is important, clowns won't necessarily host any anemone, at least not right away. and some anemones won't be hosted at all. if it is a hostable anemone, just give it time, they will find their way to it.

from my experience clowns are the brightest animal but they will eventually find their way to an Anemone

If you purchased a bubble tip anemone (bta) theres a chance your clowns may never host it. I picked up a pair this past weekend and for the first couple days the clowns paced the front glass and ignored both my BTA's. Then last night the male suddenly took to the larger of the two anemones and the female soon followed. I've read of people using pictures of clowns to lure them toward a host but I don't know how well that actually works.

If your pair doesn't take to a host it doesn't mean they aren't happy. Some just don't and still live long happy lives. I would just leave them alone and let them figure things out for themselves.

Wow, you guys are so prompt at replying!! My kind of crowd!

They are bubble anemones. The smaller one is about 2-3 inches. The larger one is 5 inches. Maybe you're right, I need to give it time. I might lure them with pictures of a clown fish. That's a good idea! :)

Having trouble with the water condition too -- embarassingly high nitrate. But I'm working on it.

Thanks everyone!
