I would take it out of the tank or in the tank and run water till its clear. Then put back in tank and fill it up with saltwater.

I've done this a few times now and has never been a problem. How old and nasty is the sand? This last time I just started with new dry sand, but I rinsed it a bunch and put it right in and filled the tank with saltwater.

Have you considered just gravel vacuming the sand? Petco/Petsmart sells gravel vacs in different sizes. After the gravel vac is finished your sand will be super clean and white like brand new. Just have a large amount of saltwater on hand to do a big water change.

Nevermind, just read this. I agree with Jose. Just take all the sand out and rinse it with tap water. Let it dry out in the sun or do a final rinse with ro/di then put back into the tank.
