I was hoping I could get some opinions about hobbyist coral pricing.

So, I bought a frag of a really nice chalice about 5 years ago, I paid $100 for a single eye, which I think its worth IMO, from my local reef club in the Midwest.

After years of growing and trading and die-off, I have a small colony that I fragged. The coral is certainly unique, but it didn't really become very popular and not a lot of people know about it.

The guy I bought it from got it as a wild colony in a trans-shipment from Tonga, and I have never seen another chalice quite like this one.

My question is how to price frags of this coral. I was thinking I could put it on eBay, but man I hate eBay! There are a few vendors who sell frags of this coral periodically, but's still around ~$100 per eye.

I don't want to post pics because I don't want this to seem like a advertisement post, I'm just curious how others would approach this situation.

Put a value on it and sell for that. I always say " a coral is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it". Especially me a hardcore addict. lol

Thing is I have no idea what it's worth. The few vendors that sell frags charge around $100 per eye which seems like a lot to me. I bought it based on its color which was long before chalices became a fad.

The coral looks a lot like the flamethrower, but more metallic red and no orange edge.

I quoted myself lol. If $100 is steep then put a price lower than that. I can sell a coral for $$$$$ of money but doesnt mean any one is going to buy it.

+1 you don't know what it's worth until you put a price on it and see how many people respond to the interest of buying what you're offering....if no one respond then you know to lower the price.....simple economics.....supply and demand will determine the value....there are no price guides like trading comics or sports cards to go by in this hobby =)

This is true..

But in my experience when a unknown hobbyist tries to sell a LE-type coral that isn't widely known, people don't really go for it.

First off, I have been given a bunch of great deals over the year from fellow reefers and some vendors, so any time I have an opportunity to sell off some "growth frags", I go as low as I can trying to give back.

If I had paid $100 for a single eye of a chalice that some vendors are still selling for that much, and I have multiple frags to sell, I would probably sell for much cheaper, maybe $50 an eye. That way it should sell fast(I hate bumping my threads), I can make my initial investment back with just 2 eyes and everything I make after that is profit and goes right back into the tank. Just my .02

That sounds reasonable, and yes, any money would go directly back to my tank.

Seriously? Nah, I was going to put it on R2R because there are more people there.
That and I'm banned from RC....
So what you're saying is if anyone is interested on your mystery chalice they need to join R2R. Were you sent in as a spy? Be honest now.

You keep asking me questions so I feel inclined to answer. Here's a free bump for your cause though.
