Have any of you guys seen some of the more recent ads on craigslist or dealt with any of the individuals? Pretty curious...

Sample ad:
Retired former owner of a wholesale business which distributed live Saltwater Fish, Corals, and Inverts, for over 30 years. You can order ANY species you want, how many you would like, and also their size. The animals are SOLD BY THE BOX, not piece by piece. As an example, the normal box of Coral from Jakarta is about 20 pieces. They are shipped directly from their source to LAX. The cost to you will be MUCH cheaper than a Tropical Fish Store. Because I have been associated with this business since the early 70's, I can assist and direct you as to what fish are compatible, reef safe, if they have a chance of living, and on and on. Regarding Corals, pretty much the same thing. A lot of Corals are just not going to thrive in an enclosed environment, depending on how well your tank is set up. What good is it to buy a cheap animal if it's dead in a month or two? I will asist you in choosing Corals that will thrive and advise you when they might be difficult to keep, if you would like. Also please realize there is more to gain than just the price of the animals. Because they are shipped direct from their source, the handling is minimal, and the animals are freshly collected, not sitting in a tank someplace maybe not being fed or given the proper lighting. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. There are stock lists available for pretty much anything you could want. You can inspect the animals before you pay for anything. Thanks, Loren.

You are better off buying from a LfS. Pests, brown corals, maricultured corals that don't always do well in our tanks, buying a box of coral that you don't really choose what's in it, buying a box of coral with 2 nice pieces and 20 crappy ones... The list goes on and on.

I stay away from doing business on Craigslist. Too many sketchy people. I know too many people who showed up to buy something and got robbed. It's anonymous and there is no accountability. I only do business with people on the forum and only after I can get people to vouch for the person in question. We have a community which encourages accountability because everyone knows who you are and what you're about. Sooner or later we all run into each other time and time again. Not the case with the craigslisters. Lately they've been infiltrating SCR and we MUST look out for each other when it comes to this topic.

Long story short. No I don't have any experience with these folks and no I don't plan on it.

Yeah... I've dealt with Loren before. Nice guy and good prices. He ordered stuffs directly from sources in the Phillipines and Indonesia area. Only down side is you have to buy a whole box worth of stuffs which can run anywhere from $250 to over $1000 depending on what you ordered. The other big issue is that you don't always get exactly what you orderd i.e. corals especially higher end coral because very few pieces are WYSIWYG....as most of them are similar items. As far as fish go....you pretty much know what the fishes going to look like. It will save you around 30-60% off LFS prices even after you factored in shipping cost and Loren's commission of $50 per box. Not a bad deal IMO. best thing is to find someone to split the box with and make sure you order stuffs that don't have lots of variations like fishes and inverts and common corals. As with high end corals it's a gamble.
