Hi All,

Well after looking around online and seeing a bunch of different sump designs I came up with this 40"x18"x18" design for my 180gal.

What do you think?

I think you need a bubble trap between the fuge and return chamber.
Is it your intention t have all 3 chambers be around the same height?
Have you considered dumping one of the drains directly into the fuge and not having the T which will impact your return pressure, plus the split to the manifold will reduce it further.
Final thought, I just designed a new sump and after 5 revisions I figured out my chambers were a little tight form my equipment and I had to make a lot of changes, make sure you have access space, i.e.you can get the skimmer in and out of the sump once you have it in the stand. I bought a setup 2 years ago and the only way I could get the skimmer in and out was to remove the plumbing and take the sump out and then the reverse. My new tank I can remove everything at any time, including swapping out the return pump.

I posted my designs here and got some great feedback.

Do you have more space under your 180? I'd go bigger sump if you can. Assuming you have 72", I'd try to go at least 48, those extra 8" would make everything easier.

I was planning on doing the Herbie drain system so one will be full and the other just backup. Do you think I can T off the main Herbie drain for the fuge so I can control the flow through that chamber?

Why don't you put the fuge in the middle? Then you don't have to worry about T-ing off your return. I unfortunately have the same setup and I hate it. I'd rather have the fuge flow naturally.

You could probably tee off your main drain right before it enters the sump by placing a tee upside down, with a valve on the fuge side and no valve on the skimmer side. Make sense?

i am using the bean animal style overflow, the siphion goes into the sump and partial flow goes into the fuge and the emergency overflow goes into the fuge as well. The fuge is a separate tank that gravity drains into the sump. The siphion run is almost 6' horitzontial run above the fuge with no problems. My old frag tank split the overflow as well with no issues. your milage may vary.

If you have not looked the animal style you might want to....hard to plug up.

looks better.

1. maybe reduce the return area to increase fuge area?
2. Maybe make the fuge taller and drill a hole 1" from top to drain into return, gives you more volvume.
3. With the ATO so far from return area, make sure your float switch and pumps will reach (something I didn't personally do and now I am paying for it).

I am still on the fence on keeping the design like this or switching the return and fuge area so it goes from skimmer, to fuge, to return

Thoughts?

How many of you guys have full length sumps, as it same length sump as display? I've got a 72x24 tank with 48x24 sump and feel like I have no room underneath.

Right there with u. I've got a 8' 300g DT and 5' 90g sump and still wish I had more room under the tank.

I tried to get the biggest sump under my 60" long 150gallon and went with a 42" sump and it was still too big. Lots of people go big sump and when they start to add equipment they regret the big sump. I know I did.

back to your design, I personally would not use the return pump to move water into the fuge, let gravity divide the the water for you, but that is just my opinion. I have two 90's (or 180/6') under my 8' tank and I'm really happy. I don't need a chiller, so that is probably why all the rest of my equipment fits under my stand. My reactors are in the sump, that way I don't have any worry about leaks. Having two 90's allows me to switch off part of the system for maintenance or even swap out part of my sump area for something completely different.
